i3 2100 - Good chip for the money?

My sister's cpu is spent. It was an old Pentium Dual-Core... I think it was just cheap underclocked one that was shoved into a Dell. So, I decided to give her a cheap but efficient upgrade. I already have a new case, PSU, and Windows 7, so that is under control.

She mainly does video and photo editing, but would like to play games on the side. Is the i3 2100 a good chip for her, or would it be necessary to upgrade to some kind of quad core, like the Core 2 Quad or an i5?

Thanks! Also, she does not plan on overclocking AT ALL, so I do not think P67 or Z68 are really a must have.

Right, so first of all, do NOT go with a Core2Quad. That would be spending a seismic crapton of money on a legacy chip on a dying platform. Core2Quads are hilariously expensive for what they are.

That being said, your sister's Pentium is likely LGA 775 isn't it? Well, for the price of a decent Core2Quad, you could buy a decent motherboard AND a i5-2500k and STILL come out on top.

Which is what I would recommend. The i3-2100 is indeed a GREAT value, but video editing needs every core it can get its dirty paws on, so four cores WILL benefit you. I would go with this i5 right there since you have NO overclock aspirations and then a decent ASUS motherboard.

EDIT: Look at this. Every one of them is more expensive than the i5-2300, yet the i5 will wipe the floor with them and spit them out on the other side.

I run a 2120 at 3.5ghz and it's a pretty sweet chip. Its not going to deliver 2500k performance but for 100 bucks you really can't go wrong.

It'll be getting the 2500k for Christmas anyway, so....

For video editing the i3-2100 is a mediocre choice. Get a real quad core or 1055T. Or just go to Costco/Sam's and pick up a pre-built with a 1045T in it.

For the price the 2100 is really good, but for video editing you will need the extra cores.
