As for the learning curve, it's easy to learn, and hard to master.
Matchmaking will make sure you are in the right category (bronze, gold, platinum, etc...) so you're not put against harder opponents; when you get better, you will be moved up in ranking.

And when you get bored of the regular game, there's the dozens of custom maps (more like mods) for you to play. They range from RTS mods, to RPGs to mind games like Mafia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mafia_%28party_game%29
Shogun 2.

I think OP's computer should be able to run it fine. My old PC could run it decently enough (it was playable), and it was a piece of crap.

Maybe Civ 5, though it's not really Real Time. And now that I think about Shogun is more of a hybrid.

There's alot of blasphemy in this thread! No, really, Command & Conquer is fine. Well, okay, Command & Conquer 4 was garbage, and Red Alert 3 is down to taste, but it's still good in it's own right, and Tiberium Wars was just minor things away from perfection. The expansion was good too (but not without flaws). In fact, I'm going to go play it now. Don't entirely listen to the "EA plus Command & Conquer equals garbage" comments.

I've yet to try Shogun 2, but I heard it's an amazing game. But I don't know if it has the variety of gameplay SC2 has with it's custom maps/mods system. You cannot get bored out of it, because each map has unique gameplay.

Tiberium wars is a GREAT game. But it's been out for a relatively long time, so I thought the OP probably tried it.

SC2 is probably gonna be the only true RTS that has an active community. Check out Team Liquid, it's a nice community, it has it trolls though but they usually only annoy the pro gamers.

Civ 5 is also a fun game for a turn based game. I'd say wait and see if you can pick it up on a steam sale. You can get the game and all it's DLCs probably for around 30$ usd.

When you have a $150 rocket trooper blow up your shiny new battleship that cost $2000 in a 1 vs 1 standoff I would call that a pretty big failure. That’s why I call it a ****ty (Red Alert 3 that is).

I like most other C&C games and love the original.

Edit: Another great RTS is Battle For Middle Earth II
