Tell me why I should invest in a SSD?

Thread Starter
I am looking to build a SB 2500K. 1TB Spinpoint. 8GB Ripjaws. P67. Why should I get a SSD? Is using it as a boot drive really worth it? I mean I don't forsee me getting anything larger then a 40-64GB. I will only use it as a boot drive. Thanks.

Its honestly not worth the money only shaves off a few seconds that I doubt you will notice. Although you could go Z68 and get one to increase your HD speeds also I believe.

only worth it for laptops. you get rid of all mechanical aspects so you reduce the likely hood of drive failures on bumpy surfaces and terrains. plus the performance boost makes it a really good mobile platform (20 second boot times).

As a boot drive a SSD will reduce your boot time and increase the responsiveness of your system then the 1TB hard drive can be used to store games and other large programs.

if you make it a boot drive you can still use the seek times if you read the guide in the ssd section

there isnt a point to an ssd atm

i got it because its a hobby now i suppose

get a raptor drive or raid 0 some WD 1tb and call it a day

I am actually amazed at this, a SSD is one of the most noticible upgrades someone can make. Using it as a boot drive witha few programs will change your computer experience in my opinion.

Having a program start the instant you release the mouse button is very gratifying.

I would frame this as "Why WOULDN'T you get an SSD"

Well, you have the people like the first two posters on the one hand, and on the other are the ones who use and love their SSDs. Personally I like to suggest SSDs. Solid-state storage eliminates the seek time of a platter drive, which hugely affects drive I/O, especially random reads and writes.

It's worth it if you've got a big startup folder. I run about 20 programs in startup, which takes a couple minutes on my laptop 5400 rpm drive, but less than 20 seconds on my sig rig's ssd
