125 Watts CPU on 95 Watts motherboard

Hi guys, for once I didn't do my homework and I got pwnd by the marketing scheme that the motherboard is AM3+Ready, can take up to Phenom 2 x6.
I thought a 955 would be able to work on the MB.

First boot it says invalid CPU, then it reboot and let me install windows just fine.
In fact it is working, I'm just scared what the motherboard can't last long with a 40 watts over it's limit.

I had to leave for school but now, I'm planning on undervolting the CPU, as it may help the motherboard a little.
Has anyone ever tried that ?
Any tips ?

EDIT: MOBO is ASUS M4A78LT-M LE AND CPU : 955 BE

My 955 clocks down when idle, and according to hwmonitor only uses 19.5watts when using windows normally.
I’m guessing (for very light usage) it should be fine, but I wouldn’t risk it.
If you can, sell the motherboard and find one that can support your cpu.

You can try undervolting - I suggest sending the motherboard back and getting a different one, otherwise I don't see it lasting very long :-\\

Weak motherboards are known for blowing up with 125 W CPU's.

sigh
I'm so pissed right now.
It was for a light gaming rig, I just saw some Phenom 2 X3 overclocked on that motherboard so I'll cross my fingers since delivery is due tomorrow :-/

EDIT: An elevator rated for 16 passengers can easily take 20.
I just hope this motherboard can last a year with an undervolted 955

many asus/asrock/gigabyte boards will undervolt/underclock the cpu under load to save the vrm/mosfets

it will probably be ok if you add a vrm cooling kits to it

should look like this when done

I'm afraid I can't wait to deliver the computer.
I've got the PSU fan sucking air right above the CPU cooler, who has an other fan on the back of the case sucking air outside and a side panle fan right above the CPU that provide fresh air, so I don't think the VRM will get hot at all.

I'm praying, if anything happens I'll come back to you guys.

It won't blow up as it is an ASUS, it will throttle CPU when VRMs overload/overheat - this is a standard feature on all ASUS boards.
But it won't run properly, you will lose significant performance at 100% load due to this throttling feature.

If I'm not mistaken, this board *used* to support 125W CPUs.... I think ASUS removed it. And for good reason, 3+1 phase not meant for 125W CPUs. Whenever someone tried running it on this board, there was lots of throttling during load due to VRM overload/overheat, even if the CPU was running cool.

Whatever the case, sometime down the road you are going to need a new motherboard. VRM cooling won't cut it. The current rating on the transistors and amount of phases is not enough to support that processor.

I've seen similar setups catch fire, with terrific flames.
Just don't have it running when you are not at home

or.. replace the motherboard with something more suitable.

You should have gone for an M4A78LT-M, it is only a little bit more expensive and is a 4+1 phase board. Even on mine I have rigged up ghetto cooler for my vrm's and mosfets, you can never have enough cooling
