What is your worst Phenom 2 overclock?

Thread Starter
Since Amd is so cheap I know a few of us have had a phenom 2 cpu that just didnt want to overclock.
It looks like my unlocked 740 will do 1.45v for 3.5gh but 3.6ghz is gonna take around 1.52v.
Granted its a c2 stepping.
Although I can pull a steady 47gflops from this little cpu so I cant complain.
What was your worst cpu?
Do you still have it?
Did you overclock the nb?
My c2 will do 1600mhz cl7 ram with 2.6ghz nb 1.46v
post #2 of 13
Are you trying to downclock .. if not, well my Ph2 x3 720 BE is clocked at 3.5GHz @ 1.45vCore and cpu-nb @ 2.4GHz and HT Link @ 1.8GHz
I consider that worst cause most x3 720 BE's OCs up to 3.7 (24/7) stability and mine won't get stable even @ 3.6 ( with high voltage as 1.5v ) so yes there you go

Well my worst CPU is my current. Because the mainboard is too old, i can't try 4ghz properly. It doesn't have PLL or LLC so only 1 cpu voltage option and it's probably dropping too much. So I probably have to use above 1.5v and it's not gonna happen in summer with my cooler.

The cpu is stuck at 3.9ghz @ 1.47v. Again because of the mainboard i can't overclock cpu-nb either, ht multi is also cpu-NB multi on this board so I raised it in bios to 13x =2600

My best cpu btw, was the Athlon 3200 New Orleans. It's 2ghz stock but somehow it worked at 2.5ghz with default voltage. Free 500mhz is the best

My worst was a PHII X4 965 C2 140w version. 3400mhz stock clock and 3800mhz is all I could get comfortably, 3900mhz really was pushing temps. I got it to boot into Windows at 4000mhz, but could never test for stability.

Edit: I am on my second PHII X3 720 in the past year, both C2's, both would hit 3800mhz stable. But this one is not stable unlocked to 4th core.

I guess a worse chip then the 965 was my girlfriends rig which has a Phenom X3 8650. It does 2300mhz stock and 2300mhz over clocked.

Ooops Phenom II only, sorry.

Not exactly what this thread is looking for but...
my 740 doesn't unlock but it is running at 3.6 240x15 @ 1.38v.
I have yet to get it to do anything above that even cranking the volts, I think these c2 steppings have a hard wall.

I only own one Phenom II at this point.

My 555BE (C3) won't unlock at all, but it will OC to 4GHz with enough voltage (1.525+).

That is almost exactly the same as my brother's 720, except his hits 3.5 at 1.41v. Anything above 3.5, no matter what kinda tweaking I do, will BSOD within 30 mins of Prime. Even 3.6 at 1.52v.

Well It deff seems the c2's were a bad batch unless you got a 965 140watt.
They seem to hit a wall at 3.8ghz.
I the other c2's seem to hit a wall at 3.6ghz and unless you run 1.6v+ you aren't gonna get them over it.

I can hit 3.5ghz with almost stock volts as thats 1.440 with the c2's
But after that its a huge wall.

The same goes for me really I upgraded to a Xiggy DK and only got 100Mhz extra overclock. The DK became worth it when I got my 1055, for it took me to 4Ghz safely. Then I got the D14.

Probably the worst Phenom II chip I have seen is my friend's. M4A785-M + Athlon II x4 640 + Hyper 212, couldn't get more than 3.5Ghz at high voltage. However, he is now upgrading to an M4A89TD + DDR3, and a Scythe Mine 2, so that will likely be solved.
