i7-920 3.81ghz @ ~88C too hot? - Page 7

Its not a real water loop, its the equiv of a h50. But anyway, the i7 9xx can easily take upto high 80s but you would rather have them in the 70s. I figure the guys who put together your system must have done a crap job of seating that heatsink. You could always reseat it if you had extra TIM lying around as well as TIM remober or 90% alcohol. At that voltage you should not be hitting 80.

How old is this setup 2 years maybe? Maybe it's dusty and needs a cleaning or maybe you need better air flow. As 3.6 or 3.8ghz should easily be in the 60s or low 70s at worst with that kind of voltage and cooling system.

Hope this helps!

I'd say yes, but just go in small steps, not 100MHz jumps!
Try 3.25GHz with the same vcore, and run prime95 for at least 1 hour to get a good read on your temps! They will build up after a while, so you'll need to keep an eye on it.

If it passes 1 hour, then you can try 3.3GHz, with same vcore!

Actually let me say this also. I know you wanted to get it stable and running cool while at 3.8GHz, but unfortunately I don't think your cooling solution is up to that task!

So, if your happy with your CPU at 3.2GHz, then I'd say just leave it there.

But also remember, your using a program thats designed to artificially push all threads to 100% usage.
In the real world, you'll never be up to that level, so your cpu wont be hitting those high temps either.

my friend had that problem too on his 920. he found out the thermal paste had a break in period and hadnt reached it yet. once he reached 500 hours his temps dropped to 71 full load. idk if the paste was really what was causing his problem but its worth a try right? or you couldve just gotten a bunk cpu. my core2quad had heat problems. but i returned and got a new one and the temps were fine. but that pc is dead (RIP). im osx now
