I have reference cooled 580's and Asus Direct CU-II 580's (which have a similar design to the Mars cooling) and the Asus design absolutely slaughter's reference cooling at stock or overclocked.
Also I'm able to fit two 3 slot Asus 580's on all of my Sandy Bridge boards and still have room left over for a sound card. Sure tri-SLI would be impossible but then again, the ROI on TRI-SLI is minimal.
The irony is that is Asus priced this card at say 15-20% more than a standard GTX590, they would probably sell quite a few of them. Historically though, these special edition cards tend to be astronomically expensive.
