Got the OK from lady to spend $$ on new rig

Thread Starter
so my water cooling system leaked and created a chain of events.... burnt the graphics card (4890) so I had it replaced with a PNY 560ti OC, then while trying take take out the old ass CPU cooler mount off the mobo, I messed up my motherboard. considering it's an older core 2 duo, it's hard to find a good mobo for it with DDR2. so with my upset voice talked to the lady.

she approved us using the best buy card that we have to spend about 500-700 dollars to get a new motherboard, CPU and ram.

so I'm looking for suggestions.

honestly I've been an intel guy, so I'm looking at the new i7. well, if you guys think I can do better with an AMD, say so. I've been out of the loop for a very long time.

I mainly use my rig for gaming and a big fan of overclocking.

so open up your browser, go to www.bestbuy.com and see what CPU/mobo/memory combo we can get that's 700 bucks.

ready, set, GO!

your only limitation is bestbuy... because we're going to use our bestbuy card, and if we spend 1,000 we get 18 months to pay it off with 0% APR. I bought the PNY 560ti from there yesterday, so we'll 'return' that and rebuy it, which gives us about 700-750 bucks to play with

this could be an easy start...

Intel® - Unlocked Core™ i7-2600K Processor and ASUS Deluxe ATX Motherboard Bundle

not sure what ASUS mobo it uses though

Intel® - Unlocked Core™ i5-2500K Processor and ASUS Pro ATX Motherboard Bundle

Corsair - 2-Pack 2GB PC3-12800 DDR3 DIMM Memory Kit

2 Of those... Or two of these...
Kingston Technology - HyperX 2-Pack 4GB PC3-14400

Not much memory on the bestbuy site. So... Selection is a bit limited.

Go i5/i7 all the way. (1155) You can break into a super fast segment for 500$ since you will be re-using stuff. Always remember to use caution and pace yourself. Too bad you messed up some hardware! But it happens! We all know the saying. Congrats on getting approval. Wife approvals are hard to come by sometimes!

that bundle seems good... I see that the mobo that it comes with is P8Z68 DELUXE or a P8P67, which seems like a badass mobo. is that thing OC friendly?

and yes on the approval... we were just arguing how i've been spending buying guns (my other hobby) and how I never use them. but she knows I use my computer everyday. so she ok'd it. I couldn't believe it.

whats the mobo that comes with that bundle? because it has the picture of a P8Z68, but model says P8P67. I assume it's the P67

The 2500k would be fine, unless you are using heavily threaded applications like Adobe products, etc.

I do use PS, but it's really a gaming rig...

I was thinking, how about a small SSD for main apps, like OS and PS, firefox etc

could do i7, or i5 with SSD
