You need a very fast SSD for that but it can be small as 20GB, Intel got a special SSD just for that. a 20GB SLC SSD. It takes a while before everything is speed up though.

Im using my msi z68 board, and i absolutely love it, it is one of the best overclocking boards i've had... msi have really improved their game with their mosfets now.

I personally have my two 1TB samsung f3s in raid 0, then I use my old 64GB SSD to cache the array, and im finding the setup amazing! It really seems to work, as I can feel that the OS has been remembered as frequently used data and loads as if im using just an SSD, the same with some games.

I find it great as I think of it as almost 2TB SSD biggrin.gif

I advise you in getting a single 120gb SSD for OS. The smaller ones have a performance penalty that is barely fixed with two of them in raid 0. Therefore i would save a sata3 port, improve in reliability (raid0 is 10 times more prone to failures than a single drive), and keep a highspeed port for another SSD or a modern HDD.

SSD cache does not improve performance as much as the OS on a SSD installed in the normal way (real-world results varies).

Even better results when using an SLC SSD instead of MLC

Offcourse an SSD on its own is still faster then drive's cached with an SSD

i had considered using a couple of high speed hdds in raid 0 as boot due to the fail rate on most ssd. but it seems with the new firmware updates ssds are starting to come around.

would using a single ssd as boot be noticeably faster than using a ssd cache?

I would definitely agree with the above poster and stick to one SSD for storage. I would also not advise RAID 0ing drives for storage. Most people RAID 0 drives rotor boot and their storage is either a single drive or a redundant array (1, 5 etc) putting your data on raid 0 is setting yourself up for data loss.


Edit: not sure what you mean by high failure rates of SSDs most have low failure rates but can experience performance degradation over years of high disk use. And yes one SSD in boot will slaughter a HDD boot + SSD for cache

ok, so this is what im thinking now.

for my three sataIII ports ssd for boot, with 2 hdd in raid 1.
and for my 4 sataII ports 3 hdds in raid 5 with a ssd cache.
is that a possible setup. havent read too far into SRT, not alot of reviews on it yet.

(side note) i keep having to go back and edit my responses due to my atrocious spelling and grammar.

i may be wrong, but it seems alot of reviews on newegg point towards a ssd going dead after a couple of months(or less). but that dosnt take into factor the number of individuals using them as full storage and not just for the os. theres been only a few ssds that ive looked at on new egg that dont have a fairly high report of doa, and death shortly after arrival. and those that dont have minimal reviews. i personally havnt had the chance to use them, so im still a little skeptical

I have a single 64GB SSD for the boot drive along with 2x 750GB WD black's in RAID 0. It works great for what I need. I simply install most of the programs to the storage drive so I don't max out the SSD.

i like the idea of raid 0, but not at the risk of failure. i may end up modifying my setup shortly after my build. ive been looking at some raid enclosures, which would allow me to justify 0ing up my system
