Fan with filter in HDD rack fan enclosure

Thread Starter
I have the M8 with this HDD cage option:

I got some Bgears filters to go with my 120x120x25mm fans:

Unfortunately they both won't fit in the space in the HDD bracket, so I plan to get some Scythe Slipstream Slim fans which are 120x120x12mm. Has anyone else already tried this setup? Does it fit, is it noisy, general impressions? TIA.

HDDs run best between 35-45c after 50 the danger starts and my drives if left uncooled can easily exceed 50+ in summer. That article's claim about cooled drives fail more often is not about a simple fan on hdd cages. It means watercooled or heatsink+fans which ofcourse isn't suited for all hdds. Hdds have a minimum operating temp because of the mechanism.

That must be a special hdd cage, where do you put it actually ? If you can use the regular 5.25 drivebays there are other hdd cages with free fan mounting

you think google watercools harddrives?

no. "active cooling". meaning anything.

i run my drives in a 4 block in the bottom of my case with NO air flow. never seen em go over 40c. and i dont have AC and i live on the top floor.

Hard disks don't need to be supercooled. but do appreciate fresh air.

Google certainly doesn't watercool their HDDs. Their arrays however live in thermally controlled enclosures with the HDDs getting fed 21-24 deg air 24x7

I ought to know... I (used to) work in a datacenter smile.gif

btw when I get my TX (or TH10 if I lose the will to wait) I will not be actively cooling the HDDs. I'll let positive pressure take care of that since the slightly warmed air that's done passing through my rads needs to get out somewhere...

HDDs definitely do not like fan vibrations. The M* crowd with their fan-mounted HDDs don't know what they are in for.
