No it didn't. You just didn't have to pay that $5 later on when you picked up the game. They used it to hold your spot.

I only preorder games I know I'm going to buy anyway. I'm going to at some point preorder GW2, I got RO2 from GMG because of the discount. I don't often preorder games, mostly because I rarely get games that are new.

To be honest I sometimes preorder just for that reason. If i've played a past game or prequel that I really enjoyed and the new release is shaping up to be good I'll preorder. I do this rarely since there are very few games currently worth it to preorder(BF3 and Skyrim... thats it currently ).

I will give them that 'free bank loan' because I want to encourage the publishers to release future games on PC of that quality. And I'm sure at one point or other they sit round a board meeting discussing sales figures on each platform and preorder figures as well.
