Impact of reservoir size on temperature

Hello, just wondering reservoir volume would make a significant difference in temperature, or at least in the time it takes for the system to reach peak temp and drop to idle temp.

So you have the water in the loop, plus the water in the reservoir, what would be the difference in say 300ml vs 600ml? Or what if you went crazy and got a gallon of water in your reservoir?

Just curious.

I dont Wc, but i assume if there is enough to fill your tubes and pmp and a little extra for a buffer then adding more wont really help and will just increase the chance of growth of bad things.

It will impact the length of time it takes for your water to reach its maximum temperature. But besides that it won't have any affect on performance.

Ah ok, thanks. So conceptually if you looped it into a swimming pool, it'll just take forever to get hot, but if you leave it running for a looong time, it would eventually reach the same temperature as a normal WC rig would top out at?

Yep. A reservoir acts as a heatsink in a way, but the size won't affect the eventual peak temperature. Depending on how much heat the PC puts out and how you use it, though, a large reservoir could be adequate for a while at least.

Thanks! Do you know the formula that calculates how long it would take to reach peak temperature given heat load and reservoir volume and ambient temp?

all you have to do it figure out the volume of water, the heat that rig produces, the specific heat of water, and the amount of heat the radiators dissipate from the loop. Usually it takes less than 30 minutes at idle to reach equilibrium. Load it usually cuts it down to around 5 mins or so depending on how much heat ur loop produces.

A larger reservoir might make bleeding easier depending on the type of reservoir.

Hmm... cool, just wondering if there would be significant benefits if I used a one gallon reservoir. But I guess not.
