Help Me Pick Out a New Laptop For School

Thread Starter
Hi there,

New user, so apologies if this is in the wrong forum or I am breaking any rules. I am entering law school in the fall and am looking for a new laptop. My budget is $500-$1000. I'm looking for the best machine I can get. What do you guys recommend?

I've heard good things about Toshiba, Asus, and Lenovo, so I was thinking about getting one of those. I am mainly going to be using it for school, so keyboard is important to me. I generally am on my laptop all the time, so i'd like a machine that is reliable and durable, and will withstand lots of use and still stay nice and fast. I'd also like to be able to watch tv shows and movies streaming, and play some games occasionally. Feel free to ask me questions. I am a very inexperienced computer buyer, so I really appreciate any help I can get here.

Edit: Also would like to add that i'm interested in PCs only, and i'm looking for something about 15.6". Thank you.

Go to Best Buy, or Microcenter, and test out the laptops they have on display to get a good feeling of the keyboard style you are looking for.

Thanks for the response. I've already done that and to be honest it was hard to decide what style I preferred. I was thinking about choosing a laptop based on other factors and then just going to Best Buy and making sure that the keyboard was acceptable.

Thanks a lot, I really appreciate your recommendations. Since I am not very familiar with computers, would you mind explaining why you recommended the machines you did?

Just found this in another thread, i'll fill it out to help get better recommendations.

Quote:
What is your maximum budget?
$500-$1000

Quote:
What country are you in?
United States

Quote:
What will be the uses of this laptop?
Law School (taking notes, researching), surfing the internet, some occasional gaming

Quote:
Do you have brand loyalty or care which brands we select for you?
Not at all. Looking to get the best machine here. I had a really cheap Acer crap out on me so I wouldn't want to by them again. I've heard good things about Asus, Toshiba, and Lenovo, but I am not sure if that's right.

Quote:
What screen size do you require?
~15.6"

Quote:
What screen resolution do you require?
Not quite sure what the common resolutions are. I'd like something solid at least.

Quote:
Are you looking to buy NEW or would refurbished/recertified/used be okay?
New

Quote:
How long should the battery last? (Under optimal conditions, no movies/games/heavy internet)
Not a big issue for me. If I could get 4 hours that would be nice, but I will mostly be using it plugged in.

Quote:
What games would you like to play with your laptop? And on what settings?
Not sure yet. Probably just the usual stuff.

Quote:
What operating system do you need? (if any)
Windows 7 would be my preference.

Quote:
Is there a certain style of laptop you want? (aluminum, black, gaming, etc.)
Not really. A black one would be my preference I suppose, but it's not a huge deal.

Quote:
How much hard drive space do you need?
Not quite sure. Whatever a good amount of drive space is.

Quote:
Do you need any special hardware? (blue ray, webcam, specialty ports, etc.)
Webcam preferred, but not necessarily a dealbreaker.

Quote:
Is there anything else we need to know?
Looking for a good keyboard and I'm happy to answer more questions. Thank you so much!

By good keyboard do you mean like a backlit one?

And what games will be playing, and what kind of settings will you be playing on?

Yeah, backlit would definitely be good. Mainly something that is solid for typing and comfortable.

Not quite sure what games i'll be playing, probably like steam games or the new call of duty, but I can play on reduced settings no problem. I don't necessarily need a gaming laptop or anything, since I will only be playing occasionally I think, I just would like to be able to play them. I hope this is descriptive enough. I can try and elaborate if necessary.

The two Asus are going to feel slow because of the 5400rpm hard drives in them.
