Is Radeon HD6950 better than nvidia geforce 8800gts?

Thread Starter
Hi I want to get a graphics card and I was thinking of getting the Radeon 6950, will it be better than the geforce 8800 gts? Which card would give me better performance that I can notice. I was thinking of running games GTA IV at high settings (I can already play at mid settings) and other games like crysis 2 or future games like Battlefield 3. Will the 6950 do it, or should I get a different card.
I'm upgrading my current build which is an old one.

Currently I have a DDR2 800 2x2gb, AMD Phenom II X4 955 BE, nVidia Geforce 8800 gts and mobo: M2N-Sli Deluxe. I will be upgrading the ram to DDR3 2000 and the mobo to Asus Crosshair Formula V.

It's much better.

Performance roughly goes like this:
6770 = 5770 = 4870 = GTX260 > GTS250 = 9800GTX+ > 8800GTS (512MB) > 8800GT > 8800GTS (640/320MB)

Which GeForce 8800GTS, the G80 (320MB and 640MB variants), or the better G92 (512MB variant)?

Either way, it's better, but the difference between the latter and a Radeon 5770 (if I remember right, a Radeon 6770 is 99% the same thing) isn't really worth it in my opinion. Sure, it's a respectable jump, but I'd aim just a bit higher.

If it's the G80, yeah, it's more worth it.

The GeForce GTS 250, GeForce 9800GTX+, and GeForce 8800GTS 512MB are essentially the same thing, no?

Also, they haven't specified which GeForce 8800GTS they have.

I don't understand the older cards, I thought they were out of date as soon as the HD cards came along

In the case of the Radeon HD cards, the "HD" is just a label/name given to all of AMDs and ATi's more recent GPU lines.

The card the OP is asking about is an nVidia card anyway.

Either way, the Radeon 5770 is faster than what he has regardless of which version it is, but he was asking how much of a leap he'd see to see if it was a worthwhile purchase.

If it's the better G92 based GeForce 8800 GTS, it's around par to a GeForce 9800 GTX+ and GeForce GTS 250, to put it into modern perspective. If it's the G80 based older one, it's a bit lower yet.

I'd say from a G80 based GeForce 8800 GTS, yes, it's worth it.

From the G92 based GeForce 8800 GTS, it's more up to preference. I like to make bigger jumps myself.

Hey thanks for the great replies.
Yeah mine is a G80. Guess I will see a big difference but if I did have the G92, which video card would give me a noticeable performance increase? The 6800+ series?
Which Ati card is equivalent to the nVidia GeForce 500GTX series? I hope I'm not asking too many questions.

The 8800GTS 512MB isn't, though. It is paired with inferior RAM and is 65nm rather than 55nm.

You'll see a performance boost with the 6700 series. However, a much larger and more appreciable boost can be found with the 6800/6900 series.

AMD's competing series to the GTX500 series is the HD6000 series

So your saying that the 6800/6900 series will give the most noticeable boost than my current card.

Well I just found someone selling a XFX AMD Radeon HD6950 2GB for $240 CAD. He says he hasn't used it much and he's selling it because he needs money to buy University textbooks.
Think it's a good deal? Or should try to find another dealer/seller or card.

I would wait till the New AMD southern island GPUs come out. Current GPU price drops.

What resolution do you play at?
