But seriously, there is nothing wrong with the engine they are currently using. They are using an engine written by JOHN CARMACK, master of game engines. Just because they are still using it isnt a bad thing, some people on this forum dont know ANYTHING about game engines...

One good game engine can do pretty much anything. The UNREAL 3 engine for example, runs games from Gears of War 1, 2 and 3, too Bioshock, too Borderlands, Mass effect 1, 2, and 3, Homefront, Bulletstorm, the Batman games, Brothers in arms: hells highway and brothers in arms: War heroes, Medal of honor tier one (the singleplayer campaign, I think it uses frostbite 1.5 for the multiplayer) Mortal Kombat, Hunted: The demons forge, and theres are DOZENS more. And this engine is FREE TOO DOWNLOAD AND USE BY ANYONE. If you want too sell your game, you pay them 50 bucks AFTER youve developed and started selling your game. Once youve made over $5000, then you start paying them a small percentage.

Now ID TECH engines on the other hand, are a whole different deal, you have too get a license too use them and they are much, MUCH more complicated and require a steep learning curve, but you can do pretty much anything you could think of in it. The ID Tech engines, are written by the master of all game engines, who revolutionised game engines from the early 90s, from where he discovered how too get an old PC too run a game engine, that DIDNT update pixels if they stayed the same colour, for example the blue sky in a sidescroller, allowing the very first games efficient enough too run on a home PC, and he has been developing and re-working his engines for nearly 20 years.

If anythings holding back COD, its NOT the engine,

Its the community that revolts around it because they dont want too be classed as fanboys, that come up with things like "theyr using an old and outdated engine!" and "there are no dedicates servers waaah!" too make themselfs feel superior too people that play the game.

Dedicated servers are a win, yes. But There aint nothing wrong the engine.

Sorry, had too rant, im sick of people who dont have a clue about what they are talking about saying "but they need a new engine!" I know its getting off topic, but whenever you come onto ANYTHING about modern warfare 3, I have too read a new post "they need a new game engine" and its driving me NUTS.
well said kind sir. +1
people complain that COD uses the same engine big deal. i dont see any1 complaining about VALVE and their SOURCE engine.
yes it has been updated, but its still the same and looks great!
i know im gonna buy MW3 eventually, but since BF3 is looking so much better than a MW2 reskin, im gonna buy that first
dedi servers is still good news tho

Actually, I think something new and innovative should come out for the FPS genre. Like, how Halo came out. And then, MW1. Idk. But, yes Dedicated servers sound great for mw3...but to me, it just looks like a, as everyone has said, a rehash of mw2.

There have been a lot of advances, mostly in streaming tech to allow us to get the scale of levels we're doing in Modern Warfare 3 and maintain gameplay consistency with the framerate and smoothness. We've got a lot of audio stuff mostly adding situational awareness like bullet wizzbys and other subtle upgrades. A lot of lighting stuff updates as well.

It is a new engine, it just happens to all look pretty much the same.

Nope. Heavily modified ID tech 3.

ID tech 5 isn't going to be licensed out past Bethesda.

I agree. I enjoy the quake engines regardless of graphics.

ID tech 3's source code is free to download. It also falls under the GNU General Public License. I believe carmack stated that he would post the ID tech 4 source code as soon as rage launched.

Me too, although you have to agree that the COD series took a turn for the worse when they started yearly releases, closed off map modifications, and added those stupid kill streaks and perks. At least, that's my opinion.

This.

It's the reason why I'm not a CoD fan. (Anymore)

Not to be a Valve fanboy but TF2, CS:S, DOD, HL2M and L4D are all sufficiently different that, although they're on the same engine, they don't feel like the same game repackaged over and over.
To stay on the subject of Valve, TF2 has changed as much since its release as the CoD series has changed in that same period and they only charged me around €10 once for TF2.

The problem with CoD is that it feels like it hasn't changed since CoD4.
Since they clearly haven't changed it much until now, maybe moving to a new engine might help them to bring something new to the table.

Edit: What I mean is an engine with a different feel, as technically they have a new one.
