Woke up to my 6 cores pegged at 100%

Thread Starter
Currently using the SMP client.

I thought folding uses the idle processes? This current WU is pegging all 6 of my cores at 100% and skyrocketing my temps. It actually woke me up because my fans were making so much noise.

I was using the -smp and -bigadv tags but just removed the bigadv to see if it helps. it didnt.

is it supposed to this? How can i prevent it? I'd rather not keep my CPU running at wide open at 60c if I can prevent it..

Don't you want 100 percent usage if you are folding? Folding will use all of your idle CPU/GPU cycles by default.

I've been folding for 2 weeks now and it would just run at idle. Suddenly its like BAM 100%. This seems wrong to me. Plus what If i want to browse the internet or game or anything? I'm pretty sure its not supposed to be 100%. I'm not looking for points, just to help out.

doesnt sound right when you are folding it always on 100%
you probably didnt fold for the last 2 weeks duno why it started folding now :S

by the way if you dont want it to be on 100% you can choose how many cores can the folding client use...

edit:

you seem not to understand how it works
if you just browse for example and that need 3-5% of your CPU power the folding will use the rest 97-95% of its power.

if you go into a game for example and the CPU usage is 20% then the folding client will use 80% of your CPU power... anyway when a folding client is open unless you played with the setting their and choose a sacrifice number of cores or whatever settings their are their your CPU will be on 100% usage...

Reconfigure the client: http://fahwiki.net/index.php/How_do_...ent_options%3F

When you get to this question, set the limit.
CPU usage requested (5-100) [100]?

Put something else within the range.

I will reconfigure it. I did 13wu's at idle; each % complete took about 3-5 minutes each. Is that too slow on 6 cores @ 4ghz? I gotta mess with the options I guess. Still no idea what made it snap like this though.

most people fold under the premise that it will tack their CPU at 100% usage. Hence cycles not being using for other processes.

It's not slow, but your CPU definitely wasn't idle

If you want to reduce CPU usage on SMP, the best way is to use the -smp n flag, where n is the number of cores you want to use. -smp 5 will work with -bigadv, but if you go lower than that you'll probably won't be able to make the -bigadv deadlines.

EDIT: If you're running Windows, you don't need to worry about -bigadv anyway because you won't be getting these units.

Folding does indeed use idle processes. If you're only using 10% of your CPU, surely the idle processes would make up the remaining 90%? Either way, Folding SMP will, by default, bring your CPU usage up to 100%.

The FahCore (the part of the client that uses the CPU clocks) will throttle back if you need to use the CPU for something else. That's what it means by idle clocks.

That actually doesn't work anymore.

In this case, if you want to use a different amount of your CPU, change the "-smp" flag to "-smp x", where x is the number of cores you wish to use.

So "-smp 3" will cause the FahCore to use 50% of the CPU (spread across all 6 cores), and so on.
