What kind of CPU cooling are you using?

That's the CPU, not the cooling.

60C is too hot for your chip! Is it overclocked? What cooler?

The whole point of folding is that it runs your CPU to 100%. using up all idle clocks. Whatever you were doing for the past couple of weeks was also doing this, so I'm not sure what is different now that is making you question it wth.gif

He said earlier he's running 4GHz which is why I asked what cooler he's using (he said stock).

4GHz on the stock cooler is dangerous! I'd back off until you get the H100.

folding is suppost to peg the cores, thats how it works. The more cpu/gpu power it uses the faster it gets done and more PPD

i have the windows cpu usage widget on my desktop. when I would run F@H the cores would all bump up to 5-8%. Every couple seconds a single random core would bump up to 50-75% usage and drop back down. Load temperatures wouldn't go over 41c (stock idle is 38c). It did it this way for a few weeks, I had just accepted that to be normal. I also wasn't using the smp client, I was using the single cpu one with the graphical "spinning orbs". I completed 11 WUs this way.

When I initially switched to the smp client it continued to act this way for 2 WUs until I went to sleep - that night it woke me up with the fan noise & I posted this topic.

Well the SMP client will use all your cores at 100% (that's what its for). You can reduce the amount of CPU usage by restricting the number of cores the SMP client uses. Just add -smp x (x being the number of cores you want to use) to the shortcut for your smp client.

ha, missed that you asked what type of cooling he was using. damn selective reading. rolleyes.gif

The traditional cpu client only uses one core, so on a 6-core cpu it should not use more then 16-17% of the cpu. (100/6 = 16.66) The smp client is designed to use all cores(in your case 6) to 100%. (6*16.66 = 100% cpu usage) If you only want to use one core then you should go back to the signle core client. It is fine for the usage to be 100% as long as temps are not an issue. Once you have your h-100 temps will not be a problem but until then I would go back to stock clocks on the cpu.
