Lan router?

Hi there

We have lans here pretty often, and my brother and i tend to lan a lot together to. But now we have a problem..
We switched over to the dutch provider KPN wich has thomson routers... never had so much problems with a router in my entire life, but anyways

We have a lincsys router downstairs to get more ports (we need 3 there 24/7 -.-") And its a good router for internet..

But now when we want to lan then we get problems with joining each other and stuff.. (We aint connect to the Thomson router anymore at that stage)

So my brother and i are wondering what would be the best thing to do:
-Buy a new router
-Maybe we have out pc settings messed up? (We have given each other static IP's)

So for the new router we have a budget of 100-120 euros (might be slightly more if it really gives a performance boost)
the only thing the router has to do is being a good router for lanning =]

Well since you already have a router to connect to the internet, you don't really need a new router.
All you really need is a switch.
You can pick up decent Netgear or D-link 8-port gigabit switch for about $70 AUD or about 50 euros. Obviously the more ports it has the more it will cost.

I'm not really into routers and stuff yet so better safe then sorry

So what i should do now is getting a switch and i found this one for it: D-Link dss-16+, is it a good one or will we still need an additional router for it?
i chose it so we will never just run out of ports. We have had a few lans with more than 8 people so i don't feel like having to buy a new one because we bought something to small
(keep in mind that we pay with euros and we split the costs in half..)

Thanks for the help btw

i srsly dont have a clue about routers and stuff so +red for you guys for helping this newb out

for LAN speeds, the fastest right now is Gigabit speeds. I don't know if you will need Gigabit for LAN Parties, but better to have Gigabit

with that you won't need a router because all a router does is route data and hand out IP addresses, if you turn those both off you only have a switch. What i'd recommend for your router is to make sure the DHCP settings are good. I don't remember if the default is 5 or 10 or 20, but make sure that the maximum number of ip addresses handed out is adequate for what you need

It should be suitable for your needs and you won't need an additional router for it.
You'll just need to pick up some extra Cat5e or Cat6 cables to connect it up.

It's better to have too many than not enough.

Also as the beers and Thedark mentioned, check the DHCP service on your router.
Make sure the I.P range (the number of I.P address that can be used) is adequate. Or else you'll have to start manually giving the PC's I.P addresses, which can be a pain.

Well, That one might be a bit faster but the games were playing are properly going to be games like Age of empires 3 and age of mythologies (And ofc cod4

) but AoE en AoM the most, and i dont think you need a really fast one for those games

The price is pretty high (209USD) wich is 20 euros above our budget, but it does give us something extra so...

But the hint for the DHCP settings is pretty helpfull, when i have that -16+ will i have to do it on the router then or can i just do it on the switch?

fortunately we have a student of system manager (im not really sure if that's the good term for computer studies but w.e) he had it fixed in a few min but then connecting back to the internet ^^ WICKED!

and fortunatly we have 2 boxed filled with old and new cables, so were fine (Cat5e and cat6 are normal Ethernet cables right?)

Well, i still have a lincsys router wich was pretty good when we bought it. So i can hook that straight up to the thomson and then set it into that bridge mode?
are you sure that were able to do this with the Thomson TG789vn? cuz i have had nothing but problems with that crappy thing so far

i cant even open ports on it

changing the 16+ will need to be done on the router. CAT 5e and CAT 6 are about the same thing ( Gigabit speeds) But CAT 6 has more shielding to prevent interference

Also if that Thomson is just a router and not a modem, see if you can unplug that and just use the Linksys router

But there was something with it, cuz it allso does out internet and stuff.. someone posted that i could bridge it or something to the 2nd router.. that would be awesome if possible

It depends on how many devices are connected to the router, and what the default settings are for maximum users. Not to be rude, but there is an edit button
