Wanting to extract files from a corrupt HDD

Thread Starter
Hello, I am asking a question for a friend and ran out of my own solution. Here is the situation. The laptop is a normal laptop that has no mods or overclocking.

She has a laptop that will not start up. It starts to load up everything and but then in a transition phase of windows running the screen just stays black. I would like to wipe it, format, and re install but we do not want to lose files. In fact she needs to get the files off the HDD. Im assuming this little hard drive will be SATA capable. How can I extract these files so that I can reformat the computer and get this thing working again and also retrieve the files.

Thank you all for your input and info… please don’t troll my nub ass too much

Put the HD in another computer that already has windows installed then from inside windows access the drive and go through the files you want. Then you can put the disk back in the laptop and boot from the windows disk.

Sometimes it will work, if not you may need to get an esata connector or a sata to usb connector (what I use). These solutions also allow hot swapping which is nice. If you have an old external HD you don't use you can rip that apart and get the connector from inside, that's how I got mine.

go to the service centre(Seagate,WD, etc) and they will recover your data in some another disk, ya they will take some $ but if your data is important, you can try this

You could try a linux live cd,download one, burn to cd/dvd and boot from that, you should be able to see all the folders on the internal HDD and copy what you need to keep over to the external HDD.

i am in germany and to get it taken to a service center costs more than the current depreciated value of the laptop(exagerated) but i do like the idea of just keeping power to it and daisy chaining it to my laptop. that should work i guess. should i have it plugged in prior to start up or can i just plug that sucker in?
