Unstable Overclock of 2500k -- Higher Voltages

My buddy and I bought very similar components; excluding CPU cooler / Cases; including i5 2500k CPUs.

He has been able to push his CPU to 4.5 with only 1.280 core volts.

However; mine seems to remain unstable after only ~45mins - hour of Prime 95 @ 1.336v on load via CPU-Z.

I know every CPU is different; but I'm not sure the effect this will have on the longevity of my CPU. Is it worth pushing up near 1.35 for a 4.5 oc? Or would high voltages be damaging to my chip?

e/ I also have 8GB of RAM; while he only has 4... IDK if that would effect the stability of the CPU voltage in any way... im quite a novice

You are fine upping the voltage, I believe Intel states the max recommended vcore as 1.5, stay under that and you should be fine. My goal was the max OC for me under 1.4 and managed a 4.8 at 1.395v.

So anything under 1.4v should be safe in theory?

I dont feel like I will need to push past 4.5, cause I want high performance + longevity !

Oh yeah, and you should be able to hit 4.5 with most 2500k's under 1.35 v, I hit it at about 1.32. I would try a blend at 1.32 for 12 hours or so. Another thing to remember for testing is that the 1792 and 1344 fft's are the hardest on the CPU, so you can try each if those for like twenty minutes each as a quick check. Good luck!

Make sure you're using offset voltage and have Speedstep/C1E enabled if longevity is important to you. With offset voltage your CPU will drop down to 0.9xxV when idle/doing light things. Really helps extend its life.

With the cooler you have, you'll probably be able to push voltage up to about 1.45 V until you hit high temps.

Testing mine for 45 as we speak. looking very very close to what these guys ^ were saying. 1.336 right now, running the hard FFTs.

So would temps be a good gauge of the damage that may be done to the chip by allowing more volts in?

or is the pure vcore going to gauge the "abuse" the chip takes...

I guess what I'm asking is: will my Noctua heatsink provide safety for my chip based on lower temps? Or is that only a part of the equation

I'd say keep it under 1.45v with the noctua. If your ambient is under 78f, and your case has good airflow, that noctua will keep up with your chip. As always monitor your temps with prime95. Decide what your max temperature is and tune it there. I say keep it below 80-85c for stress testing only. You'll notice some FFTs heat up the CPU while some run cool.

Yeah, under 1.45v is the smart choice but still gets you good overclocks. Some run 1.47. I might, I'm not really sure yet. The thing is that I use Offset voltage so the majority of the time my voltage is significantly less than 1.47v, and I don't use my CPU a lot thru the day... occasional gaming.

The thing is that you have to decide what is acceptable. Certainly at 1.35v you have plenty of room, but I have to say, 1.335 being unstable in Prime after 45 minutes doesnt sound great (most are stable at that voltage at 4.5ghz). You might want to go to the Sandy Stable Club and either post and ask some questions, or look at the general advice on the OP.

Noctua should be able to handle what CloudX said, the clockspeed will generate a lot of heat too, so you might not hit 4.9/5.0. Again see the Sandy Stable Club thread, there is a huge table with temps and everything. Try to stay under 85C in Prime for your peak temps... while that sounds high in Prime, that will mean the MAX you ever get outside of stress testing will be 75C, and most of the time you will be in the mid to high 60s which is great and perfectly safe.

I cant wait to get my Sandy stable test done officially, my temps are so good (79F ambient) after lapping but I gotta prove it first.
