New HTPC Build

Thread Starter
Hi guys.

Been looking out for a HTPC for quite some time now, and I've finally found a setup that looks quite appealing.

Asus F1A75-I Deluxe

AMD A8-3850 Llano

Antec ISK 300-150

Then getting 4-8gb of ram, probably start out with xbmc live from a USB flashdrive and then getting a small SSD and setting up win7+xbmc ontop of that.

How do you guys think this would handle playing 1080p material(streamed from another pc) and very light gaming(emulators, old school LAN games etc)?
Should I go for an i3 sandy bridge setup instead?
I'm very much digging the remote that comes with the motherboard.. looks to be the absolute best mb for a htpc atm.

So.. Any thoughts?

Putting a 100W CPU into a case with a 150W PSU will be cutting it close, but it should work well.

Yes that should play 1080p fine, mainstream gaming should be good... I wouldn't worry about going i3 instead, I would get one with a little bigger PSU if possible just to be careful.

You should definitely get a slightly higher wattage power supply as it is cutting it close. AMD hands down beats Intel for price and performance at the HTPC level, there is no way you can get the same type of 1080p playback you can get from AMD from Intel (i've tried and failed when it comes to SB anyways)

There is however no need at all for 8GB of ram in an htpc, for the longest time i had 2GB in my HTPC (when it was amd) and it had no issues with running xbmc in windows 7, as well as watching streaming 1080p web content.

well i built an i3 htpc on the cheap thanks to microcenter . But yea amd llano should be better graphics than intel i would get a bigger psu and if you get a mini itx case im not sure if the llano cpu cooler is tall but the intel i3 2100 is tall and the mini itx case i need a low profile.

How about if we think about it 100% for 1080p playback and emulators?(nes, gameboy, n64)

Will an i3 setup perform better at that, seeing is it'd probably be more CPU oriented and less gpu intensive?

Not so sure about the N64 but for the other two, it doesn't really matter. Both the i3 and A8 are already way in excess of what's necessary to run those emulators even at the highest settings. If you're also considering ePSXe, definitely go for the AMD option. Pete's OpenGL2 is probably the best plug-in available for PSX and Intel drivers don't handle OpenGL2 all that well even if the hardware supports it.

However, the A8-3850 is cutting it too close for that 150W power supply. An i3-2100 paired with HD 5570 or GT 430 would likely have similar or lower power consumption at load. Wait for 65W TDP Llano to come out. Even if it only shaves 10W from the load power consumption, that's a pretty big deal when you only have a 150W PSU.

Is there any date as to when the 65W procs will be out?
I pretty much need to order the mb asap, because it'll be in very limited supply where I can get it.. Might try to get the A8-3850 returned when the new processors arrive.

Supposedly end of the month.

I don't think you can return processors for refund if they have been used. Seriously, though, it doesn't seem as if the motherboard you want will be out soon so I think you can afford to wait.
