Wow, very interesting article and i think UEFI is finally a good base to build on. Good by BIOS, your reign was good but all good things must come to a end

I actually built a system just to fiddle with UEFI, and I liked it a ton. I was happy to see that you could still navigate with a keyboard, and the GUI is really user friendly.

Microsoft is rumored to force UEFI in its next version of Windows. Anyway, basically every motherboard manufacturer is on board the UEFI bandwagon. It is just the direction the computer industry has been headed.

Quote:
Back in 1979 the BIOS were cooked up to provide compatibility for IBM clones. Due to legal issues they had to be designed through a bizarre process -- reverse engineering of IBM's code, and then re-design based on a specification produced by the reverse engineering team (as opposed to simply directly using the reverse-engineered code).

The results worked, but were hardly outstanding examples of firmware engineering. Today the primary role of BIOS in PCs is to load the Windows operating system's boot loader, in effect starting the OS load process, but modern BIOS retain much of the same ancient legacy code of that original BIOS -- and its many rough edges. And what was an ungainly code to start, only became worse with time -- BIOS' difficulty in handling new types of hardware like USB peripherals is a key factor in why PCs often take a half minute or more to boot.

But the days of BIOS are about to come to an end, as is their weak performance. Microsoft reportedly plans to force adoption of a new PC firmware interface called Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) in 2011.

my motherboard is working fine still with a BIOS, I see no faults in the BIOS that my board has, it even has 3TB+ hard drive support.

Q:Does UEFI completely replace a PC BIOS?
A:No. While UEFI uses a different interface for "boot services" and "runtime services", some platform firmware must perform the functions BIOS uses for system configuration (a.k.a. "Power On Self Test" or "POST") and Setup. UEFI does not specify how POST & Setup are implemented.

So UEFI isn't a full on replacement as the article would lead you to believe.

This makes no difference. who cares if this is not a real replacement ??

To the end user you no longer see the old style "real" bios or navigate the same way as you used to do. weather its the real bios or just a user interface it does the same job as far as im concerned.

You should make a usenet discussion: What do you prefer? Jumpers or DIP Switches

Compatibility. people like to complain that their 10 year old piece of hardware or software doesn't work, so we have legacy everything floating around somewhere so as not to break compatibility.

The Dell Optiplex GX990 systems we just got at work have UEFI, I like it. Makes my job easier when I'm configuring things within it.

This. I'm glad were past that stage, configuring IRQs and memory addresses were such a pain. You'd spend hours.
