This has been a huge issue for me too! I can't finish games, I lose interest due to sloppy game mechanics, bad voice acting etc...
Morrowind was an exception though, as are all the elder scrolls games & all the GTA's. They're the games that are worth putting time in, as they're rewarding, keep you interested, and aren't just a barren wasteland, or a linear planet with little to no alternative routes. And, replay value, I can only seem to play games with replay value, Fallout 3 ends horribly, hated that game with a passion. Art style, everything is dire! (just my opinion).
I just don't see the appeal of Mass Effect, Fallout etc... I love the general idea of the games, but to me, Fallout 3 is Morrowind with guns, not Oblivion. Feels very limited, and outdated. I was shocked at how bad Fallout 3 was. The older Fallout games are actually better games, with more replay value.
Although I played Oblivion to absolute death, I do believe it has many many flaws, but the game world is beautiful, it was a benchmark for most PC's when it came out, so it was almost as good as it gets.
Although, saying that, I put 100% more hours into Morrowind than I did Oblivion.
Anyway, I guess that statistic is pretty shocking, but games need to advance more, we are still in the past.
After playing Crysis & Crysis Warhead, my whole idea of what good graphics/gameplay are have gone out of the window. I have hundreds of PC games, most of the best ones. Spent so much, but there isn't a single game I want to play.
Thumbs up if you're waiting for Skyrim lol, after having all of that freedom in a game, I can never go back to linear games ever again. This has been on-going for quite some time, only linear game I can play is Dark Messiah Might and Magic, best sword fighting game on PC along with Mount and Blade.
To put it bluntly, big games companies are casting a large shadow over smaller developers. And this is apparent! But this is the main reason why I have stopped playing most games. I literally waste time on GTA IV or Dark Messiah just spawning enemies and killing them in every way you can in that game, or beating prostitutes up lol!
I'm not bothered by the prospect of not completing a game, it's not something that interests me.
One word springs to mind for the future of gaming, sandbox! There should be sandbox features in every game, otherwise you go through the story and that's it, but I suppose it's what you want from games isn't it? If you want to replay a linear story, or get lost in a huge world.
Whether you class certain games as an interactive film, or a playground, the simple fact still remains, consoles aren't good enough, they even have to make BF3 smaller to accommodate. So the linear games rule on the consoles which prove it's altering the future of PC games as their aren't enough PC exclusives. Just limited console ports.
Just my view anyway!
