First system in about 8 years

Thread Starter
Alright, so I'm building my first system in a long time. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for either better parts, ways to cut costs, or comments about what I already have selected. I'm mostly familiar with EVGA, Corsair and WD, which is why I selected those parts--if anyone knows of any other brands that would still be good and comparable, please let me know. Thank you.

Original build

To cut some cost, I'm considering getting the Rosewill cruiser it is currently $64.99 with $4.99 shipping, but is on the shellshocker list and will drop even more in about two hours. If I can get it for around $30-$40, I don't really care about it as long as it has enough room and provides enough cooling. I can always get a better case later. However, I know absolutely nothing about Rosewill products other than that there are a lot of people who say they are crap and quite a few people who actually like their cases. feed back from someone who actually owns this case would be greatly appreciated.

I really want an AMD3+ board and a PSU larger than what I really need because I am looking towards future upgrades. I would also like to some day go to watercooling.

Thanks again.

If you got the cash, a 560 ti would be much better and newer than the 460.

Because, if anything, I'm trying to cut costs and I don't need a 560 ti. The 460 will handle anything I want it to at the moment just fine.

Consider the ax750- gold certified, newer tech, better warranty and fully modular for $10 more after rebate-
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.703325

Also consider this case- cheaper than the 922 and very nice features and comes with a free $60 mouse, free shipping too $80 total for both case and mouse.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.720116

Also look at this 550 ti for $120 after rebate-

By the way, welcome to OCN!

I'm already coming up from the 650W gamer, but I'll give it some thought. I still also need to get a monitor. I currently have a gaming laptop. =/

Thank you very much for the heads up. I think that case will work great.

Your build is about $813 inc shipping. $773 after MIR. I'd consider a 2500k in that budget but let's build a comparable AMD system for less:

Case:

$50

CPU: Phenom II x4 955 BE $120 (usually on a promo but not right now)

Mobo: ASRock 970 EXTREME4 AM3+ $113 Shipped.

HDD: Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB $58

GPU: Sapphire Radeon 6870 $175. $155 after MIR.

PSU: Antec Earthwatts 650w Bronze Class $55 w/ promo code EMCKBJD39

RAM: G.Skill Ripjaw X Series 2x2GB $34

$605. $585 after MIR. Now if xd would stop by and enlighten us on Superbiiz's latest promo code, you can get the Spinpoint for even less most likely (it's even with the Cav Black incase your wondering)

Earthwatt's isnt sleeved but it's a nice nice unit, If you want something sleeved the Antec High Current's and XFX Core Edition PSU's are nice.

With those savings you could get a boss GPU like the 6950 2GB or a nice full tower like the NZXT Phantom .

Wow, thats great. Thank you very much. I do have questions about the mobo though.

Are ASRocks generally fairly reliable? Also, what is the difference between "PCI Express 2.0 x16: 3 (x16, x8, x4)" and "PCI Express 2.0 x16: 3 (x16/0 or x8/x8, x4)"?

ASRock's are great. I think I'll get the new ASRock Fatality 990FX board myself when BD comes out.

x16/0 means when you are running 1 card it will be at x16 speed, Simple as that. The lanes will be x8x8 in Crossfire, which is standard. (x16 x16 in crossfire literally only ~2% higher than same configuration in x8 x8)

Thank you very much jagz.

So, under possible changes, are there any parts that aren't really that great/reliable that anyone knows of? I would rather spend a little more on something now than have something fail within the year. Or what about better cases that people have experience with? Since I've cut down on cost in other places, I wouldn't mind spending a bit more for a better case.

Look at the Phantom I linked, Maybe even watch the video. Fantastic full tower.

Others may direct you to the Cooler Master HAF X so take a look at that one too. I like the Phantom more personally also the Phantom comes alot of different colors.

<---- I use the Antec Twelve Hundred No complaints here.
