HTPC Newbie Has A Question

Thread Starter
First off. I have Verzion FiOS.

1. I was wondering if I could use a HTPC to record any and all channels that the STB receives (in HD and SD)?

2. If so, I assume if I wanted to watch something while recording something, I would have to get another STB? If not,how would I do it? (i.e. watch TV while recording a different channel)

3. Would it be possible to do what I want for around $500-$600? (Closer to $500 would be better, as I am in a state where newegg charges tax)

1) it depends, how are you recieving your channels to your tv?

Fiber optic comes to the house and a Coax goes into the box.

Box is connected to TV through component cables, I believe.

you may need to do your research but, if coming through fiber through verizon, i do not believe you can record tv through this as there is no pc software that will read QOS at this time, i may be wrong but i have not found a way.

It comes to the house through fiber and then the fiber hooks up to a coax cable when it reaches the inside.

yea, that card might work, but it is rather pricey and you may not get all the channels, especially now that verizon has started changing encryption.
but this card will take half of your budget for the setup, so you got think about it and see if it is really worth it, or rent a verizon DVR system.

Yeah, and I don't need to record four channels at once, so that doesn't doesn't seem to be worth it.

If you get the CETON you will get EVERY channel your cable box gets. Alternative to CETON is HDHomerun Prime. You will still need to rent a cablecard from verizon (usually about $5) for each tuner usage..so if you want to watch 1 and record 1 you must have 2 cards.

Anything cheaper that would work with FiOS or no?

Like looking at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16815345006

says it has three tuners.

Like what about using http://store.hauppauge.com/hardware2...wintv-dcr-2650 in conjunction with a htpc?

Then I could use that and record live shows through Windows Media Center 7
