AMD 6990 3X system.

Hi,

Sorry to be so noob in this forum I hope to take some doubts out of head.

My idea is to create a system with a MSI Mobo MSI 990fxa-gd80 or the awsome Asus Formula IV.

Both can take a triple hd6990.
My problem is really thee power specs on this beast ...
I mean each of those boards can take up to 375W in normal operation, that is not overclocked.

I am planning to use two 850W PSU's from corsair.
My issue is the following one for those with some experience on this type of boards.

How to cool a system like that ?

Is it possible to cool with just fans?

It seems to me that the video boards will be very tight against each other ... so a good airflow would be mandatory.

Also there is another question ... If the temperature inside the house is too hot I can always put the system outdoors ...

Comments ? Ideas ?

Best regards.

This. You can only use up to 4 GPUs. Since the 6990 have 2 GPUs each, you can only use 2 of them in crossfire (2 cards = 4 GPUs). Also, do you really need that kind of power? Simply using two 6970s would be more than enough to max out any game, would run cooler and only need a single 850W PSU. Do not forget that 6990s are pretty much impossible to find right now so good luck for two.

You're limited to 2 6990s no matter which motherboard you choose, because of quad crossfire.

Edit: ninja'd!

The most 6990's you can have Xfired on a system are two, since they're already dual-GPU cards. You could use the three on Linux, but you won't be able to use the extra one in games, only for distributed computing apps.

Also, a 850w PSU won't be enough for 2 6990's and the rest of the stuff you plan to add, much less 3. Try a 1kw+ PSU.

I know.
I am not using crossfire.
My objective is High speed folding.

So the GPU's will be pushed to the max. But no crossfire will be involved.

Regards.

I don't think he mentioned crossfire.

If the cards do not have a slot between them, they will get VERY hot. All of the (reference) 6XXX cards are like this due to the way AMD designed the heatsinks.

High speed folding? If you mean protein folding you're going to get a lot more ppd from nvidia then from amd.

I was going to say you may have to worry about your cpu bottlenecking you while gaming, but its if some kind of folding then you shouldnt have to worry about that at all.

Sorry for any less accurate description, Obviously I plan to use 2 850W PSU's.

And my objective is not to use Crossfire or any video games.
They will be used in Linux for Folding.

My question is:
Is air-cooling "ok" under normal temperature of, say, 24C, to cool down such a system?

Regards.

1. you will get much more points with GTX 580s or something like that

2. linux GPU folding is kinda lacking

3. it would probably be more power efficeint to use 2600K's

You can cool them with air, but i would suggest a LOT of fans on them.
