And my objective is not to use Crossfire or any video games.
They will be used in Linux for Folding.

My question is:
Is air-cooling "ok" under normal temperature of, say, 24C, to cool down such a system?

Regards.
Sorry about that, i did misread. Mea culpa. 2 850w PSU's will be able to feed these beasts.

I think traditional air cooling will be insufficient for these (unless you surround them on fans and jkeep them WELL cooled). The 6990's run a lot hotter than the GTX 590's. Also, as Arinoth and reflex99 have said, protein folding is more fermi-amicable, and you'd get better PPD with 3-4 580's

ummm ... so I likely will get a problem with that them ...

I think there is no spacing between the cards if I use the above mentioned boards ...

when you mean very hot you mean like ... say ... 70C (158F)?

Please, no need to say sry. We are here to have productive conversations smile.gif

About folding: Obviously NVIDIA/CUda and specially the new Fermi boards are better for folding.
I get that folks.
About fans: I can not spend more cash in water cooling and these 6990 are an opportunity offered to me by a friend which will get them next week ...he kind of gave up the idea and to not cancel the order asked me if I would like to keep them.
There ... the all story.

So am I strictly limited to Asus 6990 3 Boards. The Mobo I can choose between MSI and Asus Formula IV.

But that's it for my budget ...

Also About the heat I was thinking about putting the thing outdoors in my backyard, inside a small wood hut.
Is this a wyse decision? Apart from the safety problem smile.gif

^ This. I fold on my single 5870 and GPU temps still get up to about 61 or 62 simply due to the load the folding puts on the card. If you had multiple 6990s crammed together, you could probably heat your home in the winter....... until the PCBs all melted together that is! eek.gif

I would highly recommend going to a gtx 590 if you want super high end GPU folding and still you would have to go with adequate cooling, preferably a WB or failing that, a few fans pointing directly at the pair if you're going with multiple cards for sure.

If you use the first, second, and fourth slot on the GD80, it should allow for adequate breathing room between cards. That way only the top card would be right ontop of another, but if you put a shim or something in between to hold them apart, it might be fine.

About folding: Obviously NVIDIA/CUda and specially the new Fermi boards are better for folding.
I get that folks.
But my idea behind 6990 is to use them also for mining bitcoin blocks. I did not actually have the system but in case I get bored folding I will use them to "bitmine".
So the idea behind this system is a dual purpose system.
About fans: I can not spend more cash in water cooling and these 6990 are an opportunity offered to me by a friend which will get them next week ...he kind of gave up the idea and to not cancel the order asked me if I would like to keep them.

It's against the rules to talk about "Mining" here. You may want to edit that out of your post. Just though you should know.

Not really against the rules, since they refuse to add it, but more like "ruthlessly deleted without explanation, so if you don't want your thread closed you should probably edit"
