MSI 990FX GD80 vs Gigabyte GA-990FXA-ud5 - Page 2

I have the 990FXA GD-80 and I think its a great board. Even though when I first got it PCI-e 2 did not work correctly but I cleared the CMOS and it worked fine. With the processor that I have I was able to overclock the ram to 1720MHz. I dont know what kind of warranty comes with the gigabyte but the msi has a 3 year warranty. The msi has quality components. The bios on the msi could be a little more nicer but overall, I like the board.

If anyone knows how I can overclock the ram any higher please let me know.

Thank you.

I see that the 990FXA-GD65 has a new BIOS that fixes a lot of issues regarding RAM speeds, latencies and a whole of other issues.

Version: 19.2

- Update CPU AGESA code.
- Update NB module.
- Update USB module.
- Add U-Key function.
- Support OCZ 3HSD1IBS1 240G SSD card.
- Correct CPU temperature information in BIOS.
- Improved memory compatibility.

Version: 19.3

- Update RAID option ROM.
- Improved USB mouse compatibility.

GD80 has realy bad problems with unlocking CPU's.

I unlock my 555BE on GD80, but then it locks the multi's for OC.

Its a partial fixed with beta bioses, but still dont quiet work well as with the UCC chip by ASRock.

UD5 vDrops like hell.

CHV or Fatal1ty, best choice IMO.

Yes I'm looking at fatality right now for my bulldozer build.
Dual LAN
12 vrm that appears to have no v-drop from reports

I'm still torn though I had planned on a ud7 but it's v- drop is killing it's chances

Can't be 100% sure that vdrop will persist with the Bulldozer CPUs. (at least of that scale)
I'm hoping that it will be relatively less, close to minimum.

I have a GD-80 and it has given me no problems with overclocking my 965. I have it up to 4.4GHz with only having to increase the voltage a few increments and at max load wont even get close to 50C. I haven't seen it go past 48.5C since I've had it.

I have had no issues with this board and definitely recommend it. I've been able to overclock the RAM to 1720MHz and this is my first time doing it. I'm still playing around a little in the BIOS and I am sure that I have more room to overclock in.

The only thing that I really dont like about it is the BIOS software. With the new fancy BIOS coming out now a days they could have put a little more effort into spiffing it up. Even though it is a click BIOS it really isn't that great. But the main thing is that it gets the job done and its not like you use your BIOS as the OS.

If anyone has question pertaining to this MSI 990FXA GD-80 motherboard, please let me know and I will be more than happy to help if I can.

Thank you for your time and I hope that I could have been of some help.

There is no problem with overclocking, there is a issue with overclocking when
the CPU cores are unlocked.
