What power supply do you have mate? And a GTX 460 1GB (avoid PNY) or Radeon HD 6850 would both be good to get, and they are about the same price as what you can spend.

always wait for the game to come out first before upgrading so you know what is actually needed to run it.

wait for the new cpu from intel/amd thats coming out soon.

wait for the new gpu from amd/nvidia thats coming out end of this year.

don't do minor upgrades, if you don't have enough at the current time to get a decent upgrade, hold on the upgrade till you can save up enough. or it won't last long enough to justify the costs spent.

bottlenecking is like taking a olympic runner and tieing his feet to a kid, he can only go as fast as the kid can go. so in your case, your cpu is the bottleneck if you get a good card, the cpu won't be fast enough to show the potential of your gpu.

AMD Black Edition - AMD Phenom II X4 3.2 GHz Processor
eVGA GeForce GTX 460 SE Graphics adapter - 1 GB - GDDR5 SDRAM

is that a good combination and will it work for my motherboard?

just hold out till you can make a better upgrade. skyrim is nov 11 anyways, thats really close to the holiday so you might get a even better deal then after the new cpu releases.

It means if you upgrade the cpu, the 9800gtx will bottleneck it. But if you upgrade the gpu, the cpu will bottleneck. Split the budget and upgrade both.

you can play the game with what you have now. all i'm saying is, wait for the game to come out then you'll be able to find out what it needs to run it well. if you upgrade blindly now, all anyone can do is assume if the game will get good frames with whatever you buy.
