depends on the game. Yes a q6600 can be ousted on certain games, gta IV is one example, it will utilize every thread, but some games are not cpu intensive

Replacing old Intel motherboard and mismatched ram would be my suggestion. Intel boards are known to be hard or next to impossible to overclock. Your new graphics card needs cpu speed to keep up.

didn't have time to read the whole thread, but I had 1gb gtx 460 sli on a e8500 @ 4.4ghz and didn't bottleneck
post #45 of 56
Thread Starter
Ok, I took out my 2 odd memory sticks that were different from the other two, and now everything is running normal. I can game well with nice fps, though I can easily tell there is still a bottleneck. I've tried OCing my CPU with setfsb, but my system blue screened at 2.7ghz.

That aside, I think it's safe to say that the mixed match memory with the q6600 was causing my slow downs. I'm gonna work towards getting a better mobo, one that I can OC, and 2 more of the same memory I have. Then, I will be able to overclock my q6600 to 3+ghz like everyone is telling me. Oh, and I'll switch to 64bit, don't know why I settled for 32.

Thank's for all the recommendations and tip's!

Just be aware, good motherboards for LGA 775 with PCI Express slots, overclocking, etc., etc. seem like they are hard to come by new, and when you do find one, it often takes DDR3.
To buy a used 775 mobo and RAM for overclocking a Q6600 right now is not the best way to spend money.

Also, running 4 sticks of RAM with intel 775 chipsets will be problematic when overclocking.

A stock 2600K on a budget board with standard DDR3 1333 will blow even a 3.6GHz Q6600 away. I'd just save your cash for a full upgrade, keeping the 560 Ti.

If you could run 3.6 with what you have, you'd be happy with the 560 Ti. At 2.4 it's not going to cut it.

Lol. No it doesn't and yeah that's a bit of a problem. It should be at 99%. How do I know? Because MY 460 used to run at 60% usage on a 3.6Ghz C2Q. The solution? An i5 at stock speeds.

Op: So glad it wasn't ur hard drive! Also, don't waste anymore time/money on 775. 2500 and a cheap asrock!

Lol I was about to say something similar. You're only at 60% because your processor is the limiting factor.

It reports at 400. Because it's DDR2, effective clock is 800. In OP's case 333 x 3/2 = 400 = DDR2 800.

OP: If you want to OC, you need to set your RAM at 1:1, not 2:3. Otherwise as soon as you touch your FSB, you're putting your RAM over spec.
