Is it a bad idea to upgrade HTPC for gaming?

Thread Starter
is it a bad idea to upgrade my htpc for gaming? Im tryin to max out battlefield 3 so i would probably have to go from dual core to quad, and from my 520 nvidia to something bigger and better. Im concerned about longevity from heat and what not

I currently have 3 HDD with plans for more, a ceton tuner and 4 gigs of memory.

But i really really want Battlefield on the PC

Why not? As long as you do it right you should be able to keep the temps in check. You might wanna look into a fan controller, that way you can turn the fans up for gaming and down for just normal HTPC activities.

"doing it right" is where I need a hand. What do I need to do to keep things in check?

Can you give me some more information about your current setup? Such as case size, fan flow, etc...
Pictures are worth 1000 words, so they would definitely help.

That is pretty much just a mid tower case on its side. You should be fine.

I put a 5850 and 4GB of memory in my "HTPC" for playing a PS2 emulator on my TV LOL...if only I could have found a working PS2 for sale. Though now I get to play my PS2 games at a higher res and with a little bit of AA. Plus who knows what else I may do with it. Can't say that for a PS2

I'd go to the egg and look up some good quality low sound fans then. I'm kinda partial to Scythe Gentle Typoons but you could always get some higher speed deltas and put them on a fan controller. Other than doing that I think you should be alright. The important thing is to make sure they GPU and CPU cooler have enough fresh air.
