What exactly do they do, and how did they make the keys feel different? I'm still relatively unfamiliar with mechanical keyboards, and I was thinking of getting a custom (checkerboard with some additions) with Blues, but have no idea how the dampeners feel. Only time I've ever tried Blues was hitting the arrow keys on a BlackWidow at Best Buy.

I'm in the exact same position. I keep trying to decide if I want backlighting or not. I never game in the dark, and i have a lamp right near by my desk so light is not an issue. The more I think about it, the more I feel the WASD is a good choice.

From their website in reference to the dampeners.:

"Bottoming out" is a term used to describe when a key stroke is pressed all the way down causing the inside of your key cap to hit the top of the switch. This causes an additional clack from the collision. Switch dampeners are soft rubber O-rings that we install onto every single keycap to cushion the landing of the keycap. This also very slightly reduces the max travel distance of the switch. (Less than 0.5mm)

This modification is enjoyed by typers who usually bottom out their key strokes. The dampeners will cut away extra noise and shock from bottoming out.

The o-rings shorten key travel by a small bit. As a result, regardless of how hard you press the key, it cannot hit the mounting plate when you bottom the key... and if key does not hit the plate, you won't hear a "clank" when key hits the bottom of its travel.

That alone makes the mod worth it in my opinion - all I hear is the sweet audio rhythm of clicking blues. I pulled the dampener off one key just to hear the difference - and it was truly night & day. The "clank" was significantly louder than the "click" - lol.

The difference in feel - at least for me - comes from a softer "bottoming". Hitting the dampener has a much softer feel. Hitting the plate feels just as harsh as it sounds. It might just be my mind thinking a softer sound means softer feel. Regardless, I feel/think the dampeners are a great mod.

EDIT: I had my mechanical details wrong - when the key bottoms without a dampener, its hitting the top of switch & not the plate. The collision produces the same type of "clank" sound, regardless. I wanted to get that detail corrected.

I just ordered one a couple of days ago with the browns. I also think I'm going to email them and throw in the dampers while their at it. I was on the fence about them but the positive reviews in this thread helped me make up my mind. I'll be sure to post up my thoughts and pictures of it when it comes in. It'll be my first mech. board, can't wait to try it out!

Read the Sticky at the top of the keyboard forum. The colors designate different types of switches in mechanical keyboards, which each have a different feel.

Edit:

Read up here, should help explain the differences.
