Serious Problem (Melting)

Thread Starter
Hello folks,

long time lurker here but I regret to say my first post will be a dire one. I came home from work today to find the tab, caps lock and shift key (partially the ~ key) on my Asus g50vt laptop incredibly melted. They are all unusable (except the tilde key) and the caps lock key is no long attached. It is semi warped, semi melted.
These keys are situated above the exhaust vent on the laptop, yet the control, a, q, and z keys are all fine. The grill covering the exhaust port is slightly warped too. The computer was idle all day (my roommate may have been playing LoL and browsing their forums but he vehemently denies it). Pics: (coming soon)

So what the heck is going on???

If the computer became so hot that it heated the plastic around the exhaust and then the keys became so hot to warp and bend then honestly there is other problems afoot. I'd look into cleaning that bad boy out to help temps.

I am not sure, but I would take it apart and clean out the fan. I would also replace the TIM while you are at it. What is the model number so I can lookup what components are below those keys? I think the CPU is, but I want to see those pics.

If it's still under warranty, TOUCH NOTHING INSIDE THE LAPTOP (don't even think about unscrewing anything) Unplug the laptop, pull the battery, and call your retailer and/or manufacturer, whoever holds the warranty.

It's around 3 years old and the warranty expired last month (got a letter asking to renew). I've had trouble with the GPU in this recently because it kept timing out and causing a blank screen and lately a blue screen. maybe they are related?

Still in warranty?

Something is definitely wrong. The CPU should have shut it off WAY before the melting point of plastic.

Edit: Ninja'ed

Don't touch it before consulting asus for an RMA, if you have no warranty left then you better buy a new keyboard, but first try to first fix it as people described and see if it's still an issue after cleaning.

What could have caused that is the surface, like when the notebook is on top of your bed or even a pillow the air entrances or exits could get blocked.

When disasembling your notebook look for youtube videos, watch them first, then do as you watch, specially if you have never opened a mobile computer before.

It is on a desk with, near the edge for goo airflow. propped up the little rubber feet on small bricks for even better airflow. I'll call Asus and yell at them but this is freakin dangerous. I don't wanna burn my house down cuz my idiot roomate wants to play LoL
