PSU for x58 + i7 + 6 dimms of ram! - Page 3

There are 2 settings I see right away that must be changed:

The System Load and Capacitor Aging. A system load of 70-75% is more realistic because this "system load" is referring to the entire system; it's referring to absolutely everything that is drawing power from the power supply. So 90% is only realistic if you're folding on both the CPU and the video card(s) at the same time. Therefore, I recommend using 75%.

Capacitor Aging: 25% is actually major overkill. I honestly recommend either not choosing a Capacitor Aging percentage, or at least choosing about 10%.

It is then that you will see that any quality 550W power supply is more than enough for your system, even if you were to upgrade to even the GTX 580.

So my answer is that Yes, you are currently over-thinking it. It's all good!

Thanks TwoCables, good suggestions.

But the +5v still bugs me though, I hope the problem I have now is due to the old PSU. I guess I will find out where I get a new one.

Cheers

Finally, I "over-killed" with Antec HCG 900W...
and a new case, which the airflow is not good!

Still, random restarts with all 6 dimms of ram!! But 3 dimms with either brand is fine!

You may Need to increase the northbridge voltage (MCH Core, I think).

You really don't need to worry about your 5V rail.

Probably need to do some reading 1st...
but a quick one, I have few related options (i think) to add voltage:
- QPI PLL
- IOH Core
- QPI/Vtt
Which is most likely helpful? And their limits?
