Upgrading to SB.

Thread Starter
Ok, this all started with my wife wanting a PC. While looking into parts/prices I found a I5 2500k for an amazing price on MC.com. So I'm thinking I want to build a SB gaming rig formyself and give my wife my current PC.

This would be my first Intel PC, and I dont know much anything about parts outside of the SB CPU. The computer is going to be a Gaming rig, so the 4core 2500 is perfet for me. Here's the parts I know I'm going to use.

CPU: i5 2500k w/ Silver Arrow.
Mobo: unknown at this time.
Ram: unknown at this time.
HDD: 1TB F3 and 2 TB f4
PSU: Neo eco 620 continus watt
GPU: HD6950(Xfire at a later date)
Case: CM 690IIAD

So here is the low down. I need some help with mobo/ram selection. I perfer ASUS brand mobos but am open to any valid suggestion. For ram I am partial to G.Skill due to the warrenty and amazing customer service, but am open to anything. Budget is key! I'm not an OC guru or anything but would like achive a decent 24/7 365 OC. Also due to clearance issue's with my Cooler of choice. The ram should be free of huge ram heatsinks. My personal goal is around a 4.0GHZ OC, and 6-8 gigs of ram(would perfer closer to 8). Also on a side note I'm toying with the idea of using a Raptor as a boot disk. I can get a 150gig lightly used one from a friend at a steal! Would I notice any HDD performance over my current 1tb F3? Thanks agin for all your help guys you all rock and have given me SOLID build advice everytime Peace,
Gizmoto

For mobo any mid range P67/Z68 board is good for overclocking, so pick based on the layout and features you need. If you want SSD caching or quicksync then get a Z68 board, if not then get whatever is cheaper between the 2 chipset. They perform equally well.
For ram I can tell you that the Mushkin Ridgeback and Frostbyte modules both clear the Silver Arrow with 3 fans. I've seen pictures of the G.Skill Ripjaws clearing a Silver Arrow also. You'll obviously need DDR3 and 1600mhz is the speed most people go for. You don't see a huge difference going with 1866 or 2133, so if you wanna save some money grab an 8gb 1600mhz kit.
The 1tb F3 drives are solid and pretty quick. Personally, I'd skip the Raptor and put that cash towards saving for a SSD or grabbing another F3 for RAID0.

Edit: If you give us a price range for the mobo and ram I can throw you some links based on that. You can get a solid DDR3 1600 8gb kit for around $60. The price range for mobos obviously varies wildly, so having a limit on that will help with suggestions.

Epic advice sir. The only reason for asking about the raptor is becouse my F3 just plain screams. its a quick snappy HDD and no SSD for me at this time. I cant afford an SSD that fits me space needs on my boot disk As for the dual F3 in Raid0. I like the idea, but am scared by all the random raid0 fail threads but the drives are cheap and I can back up to the 2 TB drive. I might look into that Thanks agin!

One question, why only a mere 4 GHz on a Sandy Bridge?? Lowest I've seen is 4.4, you might as well don't overclock when you're only planning 4 GHz
For the RAM, you're pretty much stuck with either 4, 8 or 16 GB of RAM. No 6 GB for Sandy coz it only supports dual channel, and 6 GB is triple channel stuff. The particular RAM kit I chose is low profile, so you'll have no clearance issues with your CPU cooler. Also, this RAM kit runs at a mere 1.35V, which means overclockability guaranteed.
As for the HDD, if you can get a Raptor at a steal, then by all means get it even if the performance increase over your F3 is minimal at best.

See, im an intel noob lol. the only reason I'm shooting so low is I run my PC 24/7 and it gets about 12 Hr's of pretty intence usage by myself and the wife. That being said I have no clue how far I can push this new SB chip befor I'm cutting a big chunk off its life span. I know any OC will cut it down some but I'm new to OC'in my PC's Thanks for the part clickys I'l be looking into them

You can OC to 4.5ghz with minimal vcore increase on SB, especially the 2500k cause it doesn't have HT, which seems to eat up some voltage.
You can get a mobo with the same features as that Sabertooth for less money and it won't look like garbage like the Sabertooth.

You can easily overclock it to about 4.8 with that huge ass Silver Arrow.

No real need to worry about life span as long as you don't mess with the voltage and you keep it cool. OC it as far as you can w/o vcore boost then see if you need more. Going from 2.7ghz to 3.0ghz (stock cooler) was a big increase for me. upping to where I am now was pretty good, too.
