CPU paint/finish scraped off during installation; should I be worried?

Thread Starter
I just got my 2600k in the mail today, and during installation into my motherboard (Asus P8Z68 Deluxe), I noticed some weird creaking sounds and a lot of pressure. So I decided to take the CPU out to make sure there was no damage. On the pins/contacts side of things, it all looked fine, but the silver paint on top of the processor was scraped off where the bracket made contact. Is this typical? Is it supposed to be that creaky when you're lowering the lever?

Just curious, thanks in advance.

It's fine, the silver paint does nothing anyway. It's just there to protect the copper underneath. There's actually a very common practice called lapping your CPU in which you sand paper the heatspreader to a mirror finish. In fact, you can even remove the heatspreader (not reccomended) and your CPU will still function. As for your second question, CPUs are meant to take that kind of stress, as long as you have it positioned correctly in the socket you should have no problems.

Awesome. Yeah, I lined the notches up correctly, made 100% sure to do that. Thanks for clearing everything up, just wanted to make sure I didn't just commit a $550 screw-up.
