First build for video editing - Page 3

Just to throw in this for consideration:
http://www.scan.co.uk/products/lycom...81394a%29-card (sorry only have a UK link)

Majority of cameras you use in film use firewire to digitise the footage for editing so if you're doing a lot filming as well as the editing (some courses such as mine cover it) this could be a wise addition. Your motherboard does have a firewire 400 already but if you have the cash upgrading for a firewire 800 helps speed it all up

I'm kind of late to this party, but in OP's place I'd also consider a Mac for almost no other reason than Final Cut Pro, which, I believe, is not available for windows/linux. Yeah, you're unlikely to get similar performance for the same price, but you can get an iMac for a bit north of $1000, and that includes an IPS monitor.

OP, you might want to contact some of your future professors and see what they think.

What do you figure would be an adequate size for an SSD for what I'm trying to build?

I've been trying to grasp exactly what a RAID controller accomplishes. If it's not too much trouble could you explain it to me? If it's something that would definitely help me I'll look into trying to get one.

Hey man, i'm also in college and just built a computer for video editing and also 3d modeling. If you really want I'd say look at 16gb of ram, since it's so cheap. Also I did do a raid using the on board controller so see if you want to do that. I used an SSD, i chose intel because i could get it cheaper, but i have a 120 gb. Works well for me, just have to make sure you keep it clean in the OS so to not waste your SSD space.

The ram i have is Ripjaws 16gb 1600. Might be overkill but you don't want to be in the middle of a project and not have enough ram, maybe that's just me. Hope that helps.
