Purchasing a Laptop. $400-$600 - Suggestions?

Thread Starter
Hey. I'm looking to purchase a laptop for college in the coming months and I'd like to see suggestions from you guys, and to hear how happy or disappointed you are with your laptop, if it's in the price-range and still being sold.

What is your maximum budget?
Looking to stay around $400. Around $600 if it's worth the jump!

What country are you in?
United States

What will be the uses of this laptop?
Unsure. I will be using it for college, watching movies and playing some games. Nothing high end though.

Do you have brand loyalty or care which brands we select for you?
I'm not happy with anything I've purchased from MSI, and I've not enjoyed using any HP laptops I've had access to. I've got no loyalty to a brand but I'd like if you keep MSI and HP out of the suggestions unless you, from firsthand experience, know the laptop performs well.

What screen size do you require?
I don't need a large screen.

What screen resolution do you require?
I'd like it to be slightly above 1280x720, as close to 4:3 aspect ratio as possible. I do not like Wide-Screens much at low resolutions.

Are you looking to buy NEW or would refurbished/recertified/used be okay?
I'd like to purchase something new.

How long should the battery last? (Under optimal conditions, no movies/games/heavy internet)
I would like a battery life of around 5 hours, and the ability to purchase a second spare battery for up to $80 if necessary.

What games would you like to play with your laptop? And on what settings?
Minecraft, full-screen
What operating system do you need? (if any)
Windows 7 Pro x64 would be preferred.
Is there a certain style of laptop you want? (aluminum, black, gaming, etc.)

How much hard drive space do you need?
Not much, I'd prefer a faster hard drive at the cost of lower capacity.
Think 300GB @ 7200RPM > 600GB @ 5400RPM
I'd also like to have an SSD with around 80GB instead of a HDD in the laptop if possible in this price-range.

Do you need any special hardware? (blue ray, webcam, specialty ports, etc.)
I would like a built in microphone and speakers.
2x USB2 and 1x USB3.0 would be nice. I plan on eventually getting a quick external HDD or Flash Drive with a USB3 interface, and would like to have those speeds on my laptop over USB2.

Is there anything else we need to know?
I'd prefer a faster clocked Dual-Core than a slower clocked Quad-Core as I don't plan on using any multi-threaded programs on this like I do on my Desktop.
