Recommend me a cooler

Thread Starter
Hi, I'm planning on buying a new PC and need help choosing a CPU cooler. I'm getting an i5 2500k but only plan to overclock to about 4.4/4.5 ghz, so not looking to do any crazy high overclocking with it.

I'll also be using a HAF X as my case.

My friend recently upgraded his PC too and is using the new Corsair H100 which is nice. But I noticed it was a little noisy, even though he had 4 non stock fans on it (I think gentle typhoons) and turned them down with a fan controller. There was still a slight droning noise which I assume was the pump's motor.

Unlike my average cooler i have now which would be fairly quiet on desktop and then only ramp up when stressed, his was a constant noise, although not loud, but enough that I think it may annoy me when surfing the net at night when it's all quiet.

So could any recommend me a cooler for my cpu thats a nice balance between performance and noise, leaning more towards being quieter as i'm not overclocking any higher than 4.5 -4.5.

Cost isn't an issue.

If you want it easy : Antec khuler 920
But if you consider WC the Xspc rasa kit works really good.

I'm using the Cooler Master Hyper 212+
Dual-fan (Push-Pull) with 120mm Cooler Master Excalibur fans and some Arctic Silver as thermal paste.
Works perfectly fine for my Q6600 @ 3.2 GHz (356x9 Vcore 1.4)
Temps never go above 60C under full load.

Maybe you need less, maybe you want more, to be honest, I don't know an awfull lot about coolers, but I have no regrets with my Hyper 212+
There's better out there, but these one is cheap and does the job for me.

Hope this is of any help to you.
With friendly regards,
NickyW

If cost isn't an issue and you want excellent cooling while staying quiet, take a look at the Noctua NH-D14 or the Thermalright Silver Arrow. They are the top dog air coolers and are pretty darn quiet to boot.

The Noctua D14 looks pretty good and huge lol. Should mention I don't really have the knowledge or patience to go proper watercooling.

That's good to know.

But you do have limitations when it comes to CPU coolers like case (what CPU clearance do you have), RAM heatsinks (recently manufacturers went bat **** insane with extra tall RAM heatsinks and with high end coolers you might encouter some conflicts), motherboard (some coolers are very wide and they can inferfere either with the heatsinks for the VRMs or the video card if the first PCI-E slot is very close to the CPU).

So you will have to investigate for yourself if it will interfere with something, i will only recommend coolers i know work with that socket and some of the coolers mentioned below don't come with fans:

Thermalright HR-02 Macho
Thermalright Archon
Thermalright Silver Arrow
Noctua NH-D14
Prolimatech Genesis
Prolimatech Armaggeddon
Prolimatech Megahelms Rev. B

It is huge, but it cools like a beast. What kind of ram do you have? Some of the ram with stupidly tall heat spreaders doesn't fit under the Silver Arrow or D14. I noticed you said you are getting or you have the HAF-X, you won't have any issues with cooler size in this case, just as an fyi.

Yea I have the HAF X, I was thinking of getting the Asrock Z68 Extreme4 gen3 for my motherboard, and was thinking of getting 8 gig of Corsair Vengeance. But now i noticed it has the tall heat spreaders. Seems Corsair also do low profile versions of the ram too http://www.corsair.com/memory/vengea...m2a1600c9.html

Would that work with the D14 ?

Why dont you go with the H50? Very good cooling for the price as its generally on sale
