Hello,
I am needing to get a laptop for school and need some help so I dont just waste my money. I normally build my systems. But not sure if I can do that with a laptop. Wouldnt even know where to go get a case or screen. So, what brands should I look at and which should a stay way from?

Thank you for your time and info.

What is your price range? What are you looking to use it for? What features do you want, and which ones don't you care about?

Brands usually depend on budget and needs, i.e. a lower end product of one model may not be ok, but a higher end model is fine.

Generally when looking for a generic laptop, they are mostly the same, I prefer Dell, IBM, or HP in general. The best deals you're going to find are doing a built to order option as they offer upgrades for free generally, and you get the options that you want most, and can down price some of the options you don't need.

budget is $1000-$1500, Its going to be used for school (Future IT), Gaming when I cant be at my sig. Was looking at something like this, but not sure what laptops to stay way from. I wish I could build one that way I have more control over it. I was hoping for a 18' or so screen but dont think I find one, unless I want to spend $3000 at alienware.

Just found this one too on newegg

So, 1000 to 1500 can get you a pretty nice laptop. But I really think you need to reconsider what size you are looking for. A 16"-18" is hardly what I would call portable. If you you want a laptop, you want to do 13" or smaller. 16-18" of laptop is going to weigh 6-10 lbs and be a pain on the butt to take anywhere.

Well, It will be used in class and and things like that, and before I start classes, I will be having 2 surgerys, and will be on bed rest when not in the hospitals. so for now its going to be use for what my sig rig is used for. then after recovery and next semster it will be my school computer. And I will be going to be taking classes and at some point afterwards will be in classes to become a IT, so I need it to last and be able to support me throw all this. One reason I am looking at something alittle beefy. if that make since. or am I over thinking a Laptop?

ok from personal experience with laptops. i use mine for schoolwork (creating graphs, running some small programs, surfing the web, typing a lot)

you dont need a quadcore laptop and you actually dont want one. just get a laptop that has less than 25W TPU cpu in it. get as much ram as possible. if possible dont get an intel integrated gpu.

also 13" screens might sound good but they are too small also 17" laptops are too big. (mine is 13", friends girlfriends is 17"). id go with a 15".

Also realize that gaming on a laptop, while doable is not enjoyable (not to me at least), running serious programs on it is also pointless so dont spend to much on a laptop.
