Dragon Age -VS- Mass Effect

Having searched I didn't see any kind of thread on this before so I just wanted to get everyones opinions on both series. Bioware as a company and anything else you might want to discuss pertaining to it.

I know Mass Effect has a huge cult following. Hell I'm part of that, playing the first Mass Effect really got me into Sci Fi. I even went back and played Kotor because of it. Since this was my first real experience with Bioware I was excited when Dragon Age came out. I played it and was totally underwhelmed to say the least. The story was decent, the gameplay was not. I found the combat boring, and the item system sucked. When I play an RPG one of my favorite things is cool loot. I understand they were shooting for a more "realistic" fantasy setting, but a boring ass dagger upgrading my old even ****tier dagger is lame.

I get the feeling like bioware is just throwing out Dragon Age to milk some extra money from their reputation and success on the Mass effect Series. Don't even get me started on Dragon Age 2. I feel like I was robbed and raped.

The more bioware games I have played I noticed what everyone was talking about with the "Bioware Forumula". Gather your team and go fight the final boss. Anyone have some comments on this?

Just to clear up this is not a hate thread! Just wanted to open up discussion on Bioware and there games to see what everyone else thinks.

I've become somewhat jaded with both franchises. Although I've played all four games and enjoyed them all, there isn't a whole lot of replay value in my opinion. For Mass Effect especially the game depends almost entirely on the story, and it seems Bioware has neglected creating a deep combat system, which is unfortunate.

It seems to me that Bioware has really gone downhill since being bought by EA.

They improved the shooting mechanics in the 2nd Mass Effect, but they left it with no inventory and an incredibly stripped down level up system. The classes have so few choices, that everyone ends up with the same character and same play style at the end.

I haven't gotten around to Dragon Age yet, I should because I really enjoy that style of game, but I have heard nothing but bad things about the 2nd one.
I am planning on picking up Dragon Age the next time I see it on sale.

I haven't played dragon age. I've never been into fantasy/mid evil themed games. I prefer future/sci fi.

But I have looked into dragon age simply because I loved Mass Effect so much and wanted more. Dragon age didn't even appeal to me enough to try it out. I see what you mean about the "Bioware Formula".

I feel equally robbed with the item system in ME2. I loved how in ME1 you could upgrade each piece of your gear with bolt on mods. There were tons and tons of pieces of gear and each of those could be modded in many ways. The combinations were almost endless. Then in ME2 there are only a few guns of each class and no mods. The upgrades instead are simply unlocked and automatically applied to each class of gun as a whole. Is there even a way to see how much damage a gun does in ME2? The only way I've ever been able to find out is on the internet... As far as I can tell you have to actually try the gun out in ME2 before you even know what it is going to feel like and even then you can't really tell how much damage it is doing.

You can't even get a single alternate set of armor in ME2 without DLC. That is just BS... Yes there are pieces to the N7 armor but none of them really have a huge effect. You can really see how ME2 was dumbed down for greater appeal. I really hope ME3 isn't dumbed down even further.

Dragon Age is pretty good. It's a bit boring for me now that I've played it a couple times, but a pretty solid game nonetheless. Regarding DA2, I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. Despite the flaws that a lot of people will readily point out, the 35 hours I got out of it were fun, so I was happy. smile.gif

The story in dragon age seemed much more epic than the second one. I liked DA2 but the recycling of dungeons and crippling bugs pissed me off. I actually couldn't finish the game because of a main quest bug.

As far as mass effect combat I totally agree. The first system was much more in depth, but a total mess. They tried to put everything into it. They streamlined it in the second game but went a little bit to far. It seems that bioware recognizes this hopefully they find a happy medium!

ME3 seems so far to be a "happy middleground" between ME2 and ME1... where there's more detailed leveling up system, as well as inventory, and weapon upgrades, but still a more intuitive combat from ME2

and I LOVED ME2... managing inventory may be fun the first 2 times, but by the 10 time (like I am now on PS3, 9 times on PC)... it becomes a hassle... like I KNOW what I want, and I don't want to waste time gathering it ALL OVER AGAIN... (resource mining for example) so in the last 5 playthroughs, I mostly just used a save editor to save me the trouble... but I still went to every planet possible to get 100% map... just not waste time gathering resources

Dragon Age, I was uninterested in the beginning... but decided to give it a try... it was a surprise for me... I actually liked it, but it felt SOOO LOOOOONG! I clocked 66hours and I didn't even finish most of the side quests... then I lost my save because my HDD failed... and didn't bother re-playing it fully since...

I played DA2, and to be honest, I liked it... story was more localized, easier to follow, and the magnitude of the events happening kept it just as epic... and at the end realizing I completely skipped on Isabella (somehow, I usually try to get everything and everyone I can the first time, but I seemed to have missed her) I re-played it entirely... and it was just as fun the second time...

the main points that keeps me hooked on BioWare is their story and flexibility, as well as your control over what you're doing...

sure the end-game is all the same, you destroy the big bad evil, and save the world, or you turn super evil and take over the world... but it's not the goal that counts, it's the road you took to get there right? and I find BioWare always get is good...

bad inventory system? I don't care, as long as I don't die all the time... bad gameplay? as long as I can continue playing, I don't care neither... recurring maps that look exactly the same? yeah? so? maybe in their world they build everything from the same model... even the caves tend to grow out the same way as one couple towns away? that's not what turns me off really... bad story? sorry but... no... this is the MAIN thing that keeps me playing... if your story doesn't hook me, then I am sorry, I won't play... (but so far, I only found 1 game that had a REALLY bad start... FF-XIII... but I persevered got to 20 hours... screwed up some stats somehow... and restarted... and THEN it made more sense in the story... and I FINALLY started to enjoy it)

I like ME2 but why are they so stingy with ammo, why force me to use guns I don't want to use? Trying to remember where you killed every enemy so you can go get their ammo clip gets old really fast and contributed to me not bothering with a second replay.

I have ME2 on steam waiting to play. I got Dragon Age: Origins Ultimate and ME2 on the summer steam sale.

I decided to play Dragon Age: Origins first and I'm having a blast. I finally got the hang of all my characters and what abilites and tactics work. I'm like 20 something hours into it and I'm about halfway through the main quest. . .

Yea I waste alot of time exploring and doing sidequests but I'm having alot of fun for the most part.

Mass effect 2 is the best of the bunch by far.
