Do a good deed - help the audio noob :D

Thread Starter
Hi there,

I'm currently building my rig and will purchase my parts next week but I am not sure what I will use as far as audio is concerned.

I'm going to university so I was thinking about getting a pair of headphones, with/without a mic.

I will mostly use it for gaming and a bit of music but gaming would be my priority for when I'd be using it so I'd like one that would give me a good idea of direction if I was playing an FPS.

I currently have a set of Creative Inspire T6100 speakers which I got from a friend for free they are not bad but I have no idea what I'd be looking for as far as headphones are concerned.

I don't have a sound card but if you think a sound card would make a big difference I can possibly throw one into my rig, depending on price.

I'd like to spend maybe £50 max on a set of headphones but I may be able to stretch it depending on how much the total of my rig comes to.

Take pity and help a noob, it can be your good deed for today

The audiotechnica AD700s are meant to be awesome for sounstage and imaging if you can fit them into your budget.

An X-Fi card of some sort is probably the best choice for gaming if that's your primary concern.

Edit: If you're on a tight budget, the Xonar DG seems good for the price (based on reviews only, haven't listened to it personally) and I'm happy with my RX700s but the Rx700s are closed back earphones so their soundstage isn't great.
Imaging is good though and I'd have no trouble taking advantage of the sound of someone's footsteps in CS:S with these headphones.

Edit2: Actually, good luck getting the AD700s for that money.
Also, Sony MDR-V6s are another budget option.

get the JVC RX900 for headphones , those are the best you can get for that budget

If you need sound carcd i think you must pay atleast 80USD for a decent one .

it's your call

EDIT: oh its UK , anyway you i dont know if 50£ can get you the AD700 , it's great for gaming BUT it has modest Bass

I can pick up various types of X-fi card on eBay for normally £20-30 for the likes of the X-Fi extreme gamer and the X-Fi Fatality Pro - also a few X-Fi Platinum cards, I've been watching the prices lately on eBay and they all normally go quite cheap.

I'll have to look around at the various headphones mentioned to see the best prices I can get.

so you gonna get a sound card , i recommend the X-Fi titanium (not the Fatal1ty edition, it's pointless)

I would recommend the Titanium HD , sadly it's only 2 channles (stereo card) so you can not use your speakers with it , and it's 140$

So just get the X-Fi Titanium and enjoy

Xonar DG for a soundcard.

I use HD428s for gaming and music (I'm broke too), about 80USD, so probally right around your price point. I have hear someone walking through the grass behind me, and darn is it fun to go BOO!

extremegamer or extrememusic will do, but keep in mind that they are extremelyold. With your budget you won't be able to buy a titanium HD, so if you don't play BC2 then go get a xonar dg or dx/d1.

As for heapdhone, please don't buy roccat/turtle beach/gaming crap. Get a pair of rx700s or ad700 (you can find them refurbed for cheap) and a clip on zalman mic ($7) and you'll be good to go. Don't get fooled by "5.1" speakers because they sacrifice a ton of sound quality, are overpriced, and don't even preform as well as headphones with a good soundstage.

Haha don't worry - I know the majority of the gimmicky 'GAMER' stuff is just overpriced trash.

It's mostly BF:BC2 I play but I'll be playing BF3 on my rig once it's completed.

I like the look of the ASUS Xonar so far and it's quite cheap.
