Defragging the HDD

Thread Starter
Is the windows 7 own defragging tool good enough, or should I run some 3rd party software? How often should this action be done? once a year? 4 times a year?

Thx!

.....once a week
possibly every other day.

if you do a lot of installing, downloading, file managment...etc you have to do this very often to keep your PC drives in the best possible order.

if you wait too long then the fragments are harder to get together

As of Windows Vista the 3rd party apps are inferior to the built in Windows defragging utility, so not buying a defragging app and just scheduling a windows defrag one is best. I just schedule mine to run at 3:00AM every Wednesday, though if you are a heavy torrenter or deal with lots of small files you can bump it up to shorter periods of time.

About the only thing they beat Vista/Windows 7 in is that they offer a prettier GUI, which is really like makeup on a pig; it is possible, but no one cares.
