Just added unlimited data to AT&T

I've been on the 200mb plan since I first signed up for a smart phone a year ago, with yesterday being the first day of a new billing period. There has never been unlimited data on my account prior to this.

I had seen on XDA somebody attempting to rent out an old iPhone 2G as a way to force unlimited data onto an AT&T account. I had never heard of this, but appearantly, people have been doing this for a while. Since the iPhone 2G is only compatible with unlimited data, you can use it to force your plan onto unlimited data, even if it doesn't exist anymore. Here's what I did, in case anyone else wants to try it. I don't know if this would work for a tablet sim such as the iPad. I plan to use it for tethering to my tablet anyway.
  1. Plugged the iPhone 2G (sans sim) into my computer and restored it to factory settings
  2. Powered the iPhone off
  3. Plugged in sim
  4. Turned it on, connected to iTunes, which went to an iPhone activation page
  5. Went the the activation process, which took 5 minutes, and the last 4 digits in the account holders SS#. Make sure you have unlimited data checked.
  6. Powered off iPhone, replaced sim in my Captivate, and called *data#...and 200mb of data still. This morning however, a call to that number reveals I have unlimited data, so it looks like it will take a while to activate.

This SHOULD give you the unlimited $30 3G plan. I did a speedtest, and I still have my crappy, but 3G, 1mbps download from AT&T. Very easy and painless if anyone missed out on unlimted. I'm sure most of us here have an old iPhone lying around, or a friends iPhone, or families, something. I borrowed a friends. If not, a broken screen one on eBay is pretty cheap, and you can probably flip it for what you paid. In all, not a bad deal. Just wanted to give a heads up for people who had never heard about it.

This should theoretically work for any phone, though you will need a microSim->full sim adapter if you want to use it for an iPhone 4.

E, did you use the same SIM card that you had inside your Captivate that was already active?

Technical specifications aside, you could theoretically be facing litigation from ATT depending on the terms of your contract (whether 200 MB or unlimited.) Practically however, they won't sue you-- just don't post any personal identification info on OC. Just a heads up

I've used over 20gb in a month when I used to tether. Never throttled. Seems unlimited to me.

I average almost 10gb a month, fyi.

You don't sign a contract for a set data amount, you sign a contract for data. If I had wanted to (and I have done this) I could have switched to the 2GB plan for a month, or for the remainder of the contract. I didn't sign anything saying I would only use the 200mb a month plan for 2 years. I signed a contract stating I would pay for data for 2 years. I am still paying for data. I'm not cheating the system into any sort of discount (paying $30 a month for unlimited, like every other AT&T unlimited plan). In fact, more than a few how-to writeups I found were written by AT&T employees. I am doing nothing to cheat AT&T out of anything, but getting an old contract back through a Loophole AT&T knows about and obviously doesn't care about.

To be clear, you are getting the old $30 a month plan back. You are paying $30 a month for it. As long as yuo have a data plan on your bill, your contract is satisfied.

It had better be more unlimited than the 2Gb plan. As long as that's the case, I'm fine. I'm not likely to use 20GB a month or anything.
