Even if it's not unlimited, it's definitely a lot higher than 1gb. I've still got the old AT&T unlimited plan and I've used over 15gb in a month on more than one occasion.

I've done 27GB in a single month before and they didn't give a hoot about it. I definitely use more than 5gb a month on average though so that 1GB cap is BS.

That's a pretty nice work around. Nice find. I wonder if AT&T will revert those plans with the inevitable increase of folks that will do this.

Hey guys I can completely Confirm this works. I have done it with my entire family and it works like a charm. The OP's steps are right but one thing I recommend is keeping the sim in the phone for 12-24 hours if possible to make sure the unlimited is activated, some people had issues and that fixed them. But yea once the unlimited is activated just pop the sim in the new phone, call AT&T or go to an AT&T store and ask them to swap you to the unlimited Smartphone personal data plan.

Apparently, this trick has been around since the iPhone 4 launch. Doesn't seem like they care too much. The amount of people using it must be tiny.

I didn't even have to call AT&T or go to an AT&T store. Though it you're having trouble, that's probably a good way to go about it. It also took about 8 hours from activation for me to have unlimited data, or at least, 8 hours till I got the email about it. So definitely not instant. Did not know it might help by leaving the sim in the iPhone for a while. Thanks.
