Truecrypt / Possible Corruption

Thread Starter
Hello,

Here is the quick and easy story.

I have 3 drives

Drive A :SSD with windows
Drive B: ALL truecrypt
Drive C: Empty.

I had drive A and B in my PC. I removed drive A as I was giving it away to a friend (I am a nice guy). I then put drive C in my computer, and installed windows onto drive C with drive B still plugged in.

I made 100% sure I did not touch Drive B.

Windows install is done 15 minutes later. Drive B doesn't seem to want to mount (truecrypt). So I re-installed Windows with Drive B not plugged in.

Now I can mount drive B in Truecrypt. After I have drive B mounted it just asks if I want to format the MOUNTED drive and it shows nothing.

Note: I have the password

SPECIFICALLY what I am doing in Truecrypt with default settings.

1. Click drive M: above
2. Select Device ---> \Device\Harddisk0\Partition 1 Drive E: 931gb\
3.Mount
4. Password --> OK

Drive shows up as:

M: \Device\Harddisk0\Partition 1 931gb Twofish-serpent Normal.

"M:" doesn't open like it did before and when you open the properties it shows up as 0bytes.

Also, when you run CHKDSK on drive "M:" I get:

Checking the file system on the Truecrypt volume mounted as M:...
The type of file system is NTFS.
The first NTFS boot sector is unreadable or corrupt.
Reading second NTFS boot sector instead.
Unable to determine volume version and state. CHKDSK aborted.

I have made 100% not to change anything on the real drive E: or M:

Please help confused.gif

Anyone have any input? Been playing around with Testdisk. Nogo on recovering. Right now I am running Photorec (part of testdisk suite) on just looking for JPG's on drive "M:"

So far it's found 320 jpgs. All sort-of junk though. The first 10 are kind of creeping me out though because they are a pro-artists shots taken in 2005 and there is no reason I would have them. And 99% of what went onto that drive I would have put on there..

The other jpgs it recovered looks like they are from games. I have this mahjongg master game and it's showing pictures of all the different tiles.

I'm guessing what happened is... Windows loaded the boot stuff on drive B, destroying part of the truecrypt partition. That's one of the hazards of encrypted filesystems - Windows Setup is very dumb and will stamp all over stuff that appears to be empty.

If you can mount the truecrypt volume properly, TestDisk may be able to fix it by writing a new partition table to the drive - but it's really hard to say. I have no experience with this combo.

I am able to mount to volume. It just asks if you want to format the mounted volume. Of course I say no.

I haven't been able to restore the drive/....

I let photorec run for 6 hours and it found 136,165 files. All JPGs. (That was the only extension I had it looked for.

It looks like I will be able to recover my data. I was just hoping to possibly (beggars can't be choosers) avoid doing it this way because you lose all the filenames and any sense of sorting. Everything is dumped into one big pile with new names.

Currently letting Photorec run. Gonna let it go 100% hopefully...

Have only it searching for the following file extensions:

asf
bmp
flac
flv
gif
iso
jpg
mkv
mov
mp3
mpg
rar
riff

Currently 1hour 20 mins in, 41,000 found so far. I set it to not dump corrupted files. And it's searching WHOLE DISK. I am deleting items as I go.

Out of the 10,000 I have gone through. I kept 3,362. Only took about 10 mins to go through that many. Easy enough to sort by size and such.

Somewhat good news anyone who might read this:

Recovered 400,000+ files

Searched for

asf
bmp
flv
gif
iso
jpg
mkv
mov
mpg
rar
riff

Took about 8 hours... Now it's time to sort!

Well that's good news. Hopefully everything you need was detected. smile.gif

It's too bad TestDisk can't just write a new partition table to the drive.
