Built new PC and im having trouble with random restarts - Page 2

If your temps shoot up only once in a while, it sounds like the processor is "doing something" making it heat up. Virus scans and updates will do that as well as other apps and utilities so I don't think that is anything to worry about...... yet.

If you do decide to reseat the heatsink, do yourself a favor and reseat the processor too, just in case it might not be seated correctly. Check for any bent pins in the socket. It's a long shot but why not check everything?

The reason I mentioned ram is that I've had a failed overclock (ram clocked too high) and get an occasional BSOD. Or just plain too high a Bclk without adjusting the Vcore and QPI/Dram accordingly. One more thing to check would be all your power connections. Just make sure that the molex connectors are firmly seated, snapped in place. Also, did you check the standoffs in your case? More than once someone was using a case that had the standoffs already installed and there were extras installed that they did NOT need, like for a mATX mobo. That'll create a short that would cause a reboot. Good luck and let us know what you find.

edit:

If you've never done a BIOS update, I would NOT do that yet! Yes they can be tricky and you can brick your mobo easily. I seriously doubt that you have a BIOS problem with your P6X58D-E

Windows Genuine will also do that. If you are not activated and using pirated Windows it is capable of acting that way. It can also act this way even if you do have genuine Windows.

The "not genuine" message / watermark / black screen does not necessarily have to appear for you, there are grace periods between when it annoys you and when it stays silent. Such is also the case between random restarts.

In some cases you will have to reinstall Windows; there is no other solution.

It could be PSU but I kinda feel like the PSU would just shut off and stay off, not shut off & turn back on.... so I dunno about that one.
