Too high temp CPU (intel core i7 960)

Hello everyone!

I'd briefly like to introduce myself, my name is Floris and I am from The Netherlands. I am having some issues with my CPU so I decided to seek some help on these forums (Have heard several good things about it)

The problem is that my CPU gets too hot (At least I think). I am a total nub at this kind of stuff, I barely know how it works so I have come for help!

First I'll post my PC specs
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (6,1 build 7600)
Bios: 09/23/10 21:00:01 Ver: 08.00.15
Processor: Intel Core i7 CPU 960 @ 3.20 GHz (8CPUs), ~3.6GHz
Memory: 12288MB Ram (Crossairs ram)
2x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570 (SLI'd)

That's about all I know, pulled it off DxDiag.

I dont exactly know what kind of information you fellas would like to know, so I'll just throw some.

Alright, so I host a Minecraft server where people can play on and have a good time. I havent bought my PC for hosting, I bought it for gaming, games like Crysis 2, Battlefield 3 and stuff like that.

Lately (since I have started hosting) my PC has crashed twice, blue screen.
It said:

IRQL_GT_ZERO_AT_SYSTEM_SERVICE
Bla ba bla
Technical info:
STOP: 0x0000004A (0x0000000074932DD9, 0x0000000000000002, 0x0000000000000000, 0xFFFFF8800B3C5CA0)

I have got three fans in my PC. One huge, rather expensive, fan on my CPU. One fan on the side of my PC and one in the front. My CPU has cooling paste on it, obviously.

The first crash has occured when I had my PC on for 2-3 days straight, and then started to play Minecraft again.

I researched the problem a bit and downloaded Real Temp 3.60, not sure how it works but I can read the temp of my CPU and what not.

Currently it's between 76-81, a minimum of 58 when I turned my PC on after I let it cooldown for about 45 minutes.

Uhm, I think that's about all the information I have to give you... If there is ANYTHING else you'd like to know, feel free to ask.

Thanks ahead,

//Choco

Hi Chococake,

Welcome to OCN.

From what you posted here that error has to do with the OS. Have you updated this OS with any patches?
If not, I suggest you install any and all.

Also, that minimum temp is kind high. What is the temp of the room that your server is in? This can have an effect on the temp. I'm assuming that you did not OC that chip.

You can try reseating the heatsink again and remember to only use a small amount of heat paste.

Thanks for your fast reply!

The temp in my room is about 23.9 (celcius). Also, my PC was about 93 degrees a second ago when I was playing Minecraft. Scared the shizz out of me.

You really think it's my OS? Because the problem started after 2-3 days of hosting (my PC being on 24/7) I install all the patches right away.

As far as I know my PC will automatically turn off around 97-99 degrees (CPU) and since my CPU temp was 93 a second ago I think it's very plausable that it was my CPU.

Of course, I trust your professional opinion and will look into the patches right away.

I have looked into the updates, there are no real updates for my Windows besides security (against hacks etc).

Also look into reseating the heatsink on the CPU. when you said you room is 23 celcius but the computer was 93 degrees, did you mean 93 Celcius?
If so, that is way too high.

Yeah, celcius (That's what Real Temp is telling me).

I still don'tt know what the heatsink is, is it the big metal thingy + fan on the CPU?

Edit: It's between 80-90 celcius atm

Also, just curious but, what does reseating the heatsink do good for? I don't question your methods, just want to understand them!

Thanks for the quick reply!

I'm thinking that you need to reseat your cpu cooler, applying new thermal paste.

Also, you said that you have 3 fans on your pc (counting the one on your cpu cooler) I'm assuming the front and side are intake fans. I would reccommend getting another fan for exhaust. Most pc cases have a space for a fan behind the cpu cooler (upper rear section of the case).
This should help lowering the overall case temps as it would push the hot air out.

You people are scaring me! Haha.

So, just take the big CPU cooler off, apply new thermal paste (Should I scratch the old one off?) and then reseat it?
