6870 x-fire VS single GTX580 - quick personal comparo

Thread Starter
I recently got a very good deal on some 6870's ($125/ea or so after rebate and selling free game), so I wanted to compare it to my recently traded single Asus Matrix GTX 580 (960/4700 @ 1.15v). For a $250 investment, I am pretty impressed with the cheap crossfire configuration. 6870's are OC'd to 990/4640 @ 1.22v.

So I figured I'd share my personal results, granted, please take with a grain of salt as in game tests were done using fraps on the same level, following the same path and doing similar things, but they are not canned benches so they are not "exactly" the same, except for Dirt 3.

Tests performed with my 2500k @ 4.8Ghz and over an approximate 5 minute test interval (except Dirt 3 which was preset)

Results are low/high/avg fps (unless otherwise stated)

6870 x-fire - Avg FPS: 33.3, Scores:838 - Min FPS:9.8 , Max FPS:84.8

Notes: Now there was a point where the ram limitations started to show with the 6870. For instance the 2560x1600 Heaven demo with 8xAA was a complete slide show with the x-fire setup. There was some occassional hitching with the crossfired cards, but it was not generally noticable. Overall though, for near 1/2 the cost I am pleased with the 6870's. I expected the 580 to be a bit stronger in some tests, but since I no longer have it, I cannot fiddle with it any more to try to retest.

Well the best deal I know of right now is this one IF you do not mind rebates and going through the hassle of selling the bundled game:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.701843

XFX dual fan 6870 for $196.99 w/FS, use coupon code HARDOCPX817B knocking off $12. Rebate is $30 and it comes with Shogun 2 and Dues Ex and as long as copies are still available, Dirt 3! Estimate that you can sell the codes for $15-$20 for Shogun2 and Dirt3 and $35 or so for Dues Ex.

So $197 - $12 -$30 and if you sell the games -$65 = $90!!
