Well, I got a refund for my HP TouchPad. It was within the return window, and HP's press release gave me an extremely pessimistic view on webOS. I've heard HP say they're gonna license it, but I think the webOS faithful will fizzle out before a new device is released, if ever.
It feels like a heart has been stabbed, as I liked the device, but I couldn't justify shelling out $400 with the instability of the webOS ecosystem at this time. It looks like I'll be searching for a 16 GB at $150 or a 32 GB at $200, preferably the 32 GB. If I can't get one at those prices, I'll be throwing my money into Philote II.

The press release from HP says they're only getting out of hardware development, they are not getting out of webOS entirely. This means HP still has the software, and until HP says otherwise, I'm gonna assume HP will either make webOS go forward internally or license it out.
Of course, I'm pessimistic on this, unless HP finds someone to license or sell webOS soon. If they don't find someone to license or sell webOS to within the next few months, then it'll be dead.
Even if webOS is dead, 1.2B is a bargain for Palm's patent portfolio. Apple backed off suing Palm due to Palm leaking some of it's patents. Some of Palm's patents can be seen here
